Hi everyone. I just joined this forum so I could hopefully get some advice on how to get my Area-51 m15x fixed. I searched and noticed that most broken hinge posts date back to last year.

The story: I bought this laptop in February 2008. About a month ago the left hinge broke, actually the plastic in the lid. Contacted Alienware about sending it back for repairs. They told me they needed the service tag number located on a sticker on the bottom of the computer. My computer never had a service tag sticker. I gave them my name, address, order number and Fedex tracking number and they cannot locate any record of me. Got bounced to different numbers, Alienware and Dell, to no avail. Since the computer was out of warrantee, I decided to get it repaired locally.

For over a month, the repair shop and I have not been able to locate the top lid to replace the broken one. Actually, I did find one on ebay that was really scratched up. My computer still looks like new after 18 months.

The other problem, I have with the computer is that the Kensington lock port won't allow a lock to work with it. The hole is too deep. I just discovered this about 4 months ago when I went back to school for a Master's. I hate not being able to secure this very expensive computer when I go for a bathroom break at the coffee shop or school.

Basically, I would like some advice on how best to get a laptop that will get me through a couple years of school without breaking or being stolen.

    Thanks,
    Paul

i got my lock to work with my laptop, it just took more force than usual the first time and left a few scratch marks around the lock area. i read about people who used a different type of lock that worked. mine is the lock that you have to turn, i think the other one uses jaws to clip on.

and about your hinge, the only way to fix it so far is this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5633447#post5633447
