Dears,
The DVD-Rom drive on my system takes all CDs/DVDs as blank writeables and is not reading anyone of them.
I have removed all the DVD Write softwares but still the same ..
Any clues towards the solution
-
there is something wrong with the reader. I have the same problem with my sony vaio laptop after having it for 2 years. but the disc reads fine on my desktop. no idea how to solve it though.
-
Yeah .. same here .. All the disk read perfect on any other system
will love to have a solution -
You might want to check as a firmware update may be available for the drive you have in your M17x.

If you are still having issues after checking/updating the firmware, I suggest contact Dell Support. They will be able to troubleshoot and if necessary, dispatch out a replacement drive. -
.. No new firmware
-
Time to contact Dell Support. Let them know the issues - if you have tried multiple brands of media (they will ask this) and request a replacement drive be dispatched. Shouldn't be an issue.

Warrenty Expired :'(
Looks like i have to purchase a new one,
strange thing all these time no need of CD Drive, when i need it .. its not working -
Wait - what laptop do you have? Is this the M17x All Powerful? If so, a replacement for another Dell system??
-
.. Mine is M17X but not powerful (Area 51- M17X) .. I got it in 2008.
I have following DVD Drive installed "PANASONIC BLU RAY 2X DVD+/-RW" -
yeah - so its actually an "m17x". Big difference. Not sure how to advise on this one. Sorry. Changing title of thread so other Area-51 owners see it and possibly can advise.

My Bad
.. thanks

Does the m17x use smartbay? If yes, then you can pretty much buy any slim dvd drive from ebay. Then you need to unscrew the smartbay casing from the old drive and attach it to your new drive.
Changing the optical drive is a lot easier than on current M17x's.. -
That I will agree ...
Lets see how lucky I am in finding the compatible drive
Area-51 m17x.. DVD-ROM takes all as blank re-writeables
