I have had my 7700 for about 10 months now and its been running great. It doesnt run too hot, great performance, and i have been very impressed. However as of about a week ago the computer has started to freeze often. The hard drive light on the laptop lights up and the computer freezes. I am not sure what this is at all, and it only happens when the system is idle, it has never frozen on me if ive been using it for extended periods of time. I have the promise RAID 0 120 Gb HD. It is really driving me nuts, the HDD boots up fine after i manually restart the system, and absolutely no data is lost. Does anyone have any clue???!? any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Are you talking about the situation in which You turn on the computer and when it gets to the Windows XP Loading screen it freezes? well if you are then I have the same problem but I usually just restart the lappy and it works perfectly....

nope, i dont have an issue there. Its after windows loads and i am using the computer for a while, then just let it sit there. Only when im not using it and the system is basically idle. Then it freezes after random amounts of time. I have no clue, im hoping someone has some insight into this.

Check the Event Log in the Control Panel under Admin Tools, see if there are any error messages that could give us a clue as to what is causing the problem.

Also check the Device Manager and see if there is anything odd.

    Hey guys,

I know its been a looong time since this post, but this issue has reared its ugly head once again.

This time the system is even freezing on the windows xp loading screen. And i need to sometimes try around 5 reboots to get the system to turn on, other times it works on the first try.

But i also have experience the problem when trying to transfer data onto an external hard drive. It seems like certain files cause the system to freeze, and when i try to transfer them to another hdd it freezes. and always the same file every time. I can transfer gigs upon gigs of data, but if i try to transfer just one of these problem files, it freezes instantly.

I am not sure what it could be, ive even run chkdsk, and it freezes during chkdsk as well. Does anyone have any insight into the issue? Any help will be appreciated, and just let me know if you need anymore info...thanks!

    Tony

I think that your Raid configuration could be kicking the bucket. In that case, you may want to scrap your raid setup if that is the problem. You could also be getting bad sectors on your hard drive so run chkdsk to scan for that.

If nothing works I'm thinking that you should just buy a new single 160GB drive and stay away from raid.

Ive run chkdsk before, and it freezes while running, so not much luck with that.

I was thinking about buying a new single drive. But im not too proficient in the hardware scene, so would my motherboard support a SATA drive, because my current two raid drives are PATA. And how would i install a single drive non raid. Can i just change it in the bios to ata from raid? Anything else to it?

If you can give me some tips, i think i have to use that single harddrive. And just to be curious, what aspect of the raid configuration do you think is messing up? if its the controller, dont i have to still use that to connect my single hdd to my motherboard? Any help anyone can give is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I would do a full backup (avoiding the bad files) and then pop in the boot CD. Boot up with the CD get into recovery console and try chkdsk from there. Let it run long, it usually takes a lot especially if it finds errors. But this one should not freeze (even if at times it might seem so). It might give you an idea of what went wrong. Also, if your system has one of this special diagnostics partitions you could try to boot that up, there's always a HDD check tool there.
