I just installed one 3870 into my laptop and it runs fairly well, however, I can't for the life of me figure out why I'm getting OpenGL errors.

I'm currently using drivers 9.8 after using Mobility Modder and cleaning the old driver using driver sweeper. I'm also using XP at the moment but will shift over to Windows 7 soon.

Apps I can't run due to this issue:
    FurMark
    Doom 3
    ATITool
Quake 3 runs but with visual artifacts.

Everything else appears to run exceptionally well. It's like having nvidia 7950 in Sli, only smoother framerates, 50% better battery life, and EXCEPTIONAL temperatures (idles at ~50C, 80C load max)

Anyways, back on topic.. I can't find any information on this OpenGL issue I'm having unless I go as far back as 2002... it's completely outdated information.

I did. I performed several checks using driver cleaner. I wonder if I left any apps nvidia related though.. hmm.

Have you tried any other drivers? 9.8 isn't officially released yet from what I can tell.

Since im playing Quake 3 at the moment and already finished Doom 3, id say something is wrong with your drivers. Try 9.7's and see if that helps the issue.

I tried 9.6, 9.7 and 9.8 using the uninstall tool every time, booting into safe mode, and using driver sweeper to clean up the remnants. Still no change.

I decided to try using GPU Caps Viewer and it's showing that my OpenGL is 1.1...

I really don't want to upgrade my OS until Windows 7 comes out... but I may have to if I can't resolve this issue in XP.

I went ahead and installed Windows 7 RC and immediately installed ATI 9.8 drivers without the use of mobility modder and I still have issues with OpenGL. It's still reporting as only 1.1 and nothing higher than that can run.

Nothing else is installed on this system yet.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

    Here they are.

I didn't get any install errors on the drivers at all. Everything has been on a clean Windows RC 7 Install. No apps at all (except steam)

    Success!

After attempting to reinstall the 9.8 drivers. I noticed that I did not have CCC installed. Looking at the GPU caps viewer, I also noticed that the default Ati 8.52 driver was installed most like from windows 7.

I downloaded the 9.7 driver (without bothering to try and uninstall the previous one) and now I have OpenGL 2.1 available.

Woot. I was starting to get worried there..

nice program for showing what's your gpu is all about.

use 9.1 and see what happens. I never played a game with opengl so I can't tell you exactlly what to do.

lol i'm glad you got it solved. I won't say anything about ccc not being install though because you came from a nvidia card which installs there control panel automatically with there drivers.

Yeah.. I haven't used an ati product in about 7 years since the nvidia Geforce line started. I'm still getting used to that and Windows 7 RC.

9.8 just wouldn't install but I think I'll try again.

I just tried to install the 9.8 drivers again.. they don't seem to install properly at all for windows 7 64bit. Bot ATi's CCC and GPU-Z report that I'm still running 9.7. Weird.

I have the 7100 build at the moment and it's still available at the moment.

I'd install my slave card, but I don't have a crossfire cable and haven't convinced anyone to help me out with it just yet.

    Lol. hopefully you get one.

email rjtech they should be able to help you out in that ave.

"i have a arima w840di and i just purchase a second card for it. i was wondering how much is the crossfire cable for it?"

7100 only worked with 9.4 or 9.5 for me. i don't know about anything higher then that. and anything lower, didn't work.
