I recently upgraded to 7 from Vista. The device manager shows 'Soundmax' is installed and working perfectly. However, I do not get any audio. I even tried installed realtek drivers {the latest ones] to try my luck but to no avail.
Wondering if anyone else with the system got their audio to work.

thats odd. try to uninstall all the audio drivers and use drivercleaner and reinstall and see what happens

Nope, same system, same problem. The sound drivers appear to install correctly, but no sound and when you try to play a test tone it say that it failed. I spent about 3 hours trying to get this to work, then gave up and went back to Vista. I thought they were claiming that Window 7 would be compatible with Vista drivers. They are already screwing this up. I'd like to see a fix as I wont run 7 until there is one.

Which audio driver are you using? The one from the Alienware driver page or some custom driver off another site?
It's such a pain to play games without audio

Hmm.. that's odd. I am assuming that you also have the 'Intel Integrated high definition audio' that Alienware used to bundle 2 years back.
I am gonna try the M17 drivers now

m9700 uses SoundMAX Integrated audio and does not work. That other models work isn't relevant. m9750, m17, m17x, m15x all use different drivers than the m9700.

It didn't work either. I believe if you check the tech spec, it says Intel High def. audio. Soundmax is the driver bundled along with it. There has been reports of people using Realtek drivers and getting it to work.
Hoping for a breakthrough from someone!

Is there any fix to this? I've tried just about everything to no avail! I've installed windows 7 on this and the only thing not working is the sound card. I've used the Vista ones also from Alienware and it installed fine but when you boot into windows it says NO AC97 installed. The volume icon is working fine, but there is no sound. I've tried looking to see if the speakers were set as the default and they are. Anyone else with this same problem with a fix? Thanks in Advance....

I just got the audio working on Windows7-64bit by using this driver...
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp64_6.86.html
Just download it and run the executable to extract the files, then cancel the installation.
In device manager, right-click and choose "upgrade driver", then choose the folder that nVidia extracted to.
    (Usually C:\NVIDIA\nForceWinXP64\6.86\AudioDrv)
    Hope that helps someone...
