I'm having some pretty major overheating problems with my laptop that have been going on for almost a year now. At first it was just graphical stuttering during gaming that was getting progressively worse, but in the past 2 or so months I've been getting shutdowns while gaming and sometimes when I'm just surfing the internet or something. Now I have a notebook cooler and it postpones the crashing, but it still occurs very regularly.

Now I did a few google searchs and it seems like other people have been having this same problem with the same model, and they've claimed that it's because the heatsink gets dusty. I've also heard recommendations to apply some thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink. My warranty is expired at this point, so is it worth opening it up and doing this or do you recommend an alternative?

First question: Have you cleaned the vents and fan yet? If you haven't, might as well do it. This would be the main reason for overheating, no matter what laptop it is.

I opened up the bottom of the laptop and cleaned it up with some compressed air, but not the vents specifically. I'll try that and apply some thermal paste as well.

Clean the heatsink(s), if you haven't cleaned them specificly there is almost certainly a big wad of dust stuck in there.

the vents are the main concern since they clog up easy, then the fans and heatsink.

Always reapply the thermal paste and ensure the heatsinks are properly seated. I ended up leaving the back plate off to help get some air in, but ultimately it was a fleeting attempt to cool the superheated NB that ended up killing my mobo. I suggest removing the back plate and running a laptop cooler.

Well I have the cooler already so that should be easy to do.
