Hi all, my first time here :)

Currently, I'm having a problem with my Aurora m9700.
First of all, I guess the most relevant configurations :

    AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile ML34 2,4 GHz 800 MHz FSB 1 MB L2 Cache
    2x 256 MB NVidia® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS (SLI)
    Windows XP
    "Age" of Notebook : ~1 1/2 years

The problem goes : The system freezes after some minutes of gaming. Having checked the GPUs' and CPU's temperature, I found the CPU temperature reaching over 80°C when the CPU was running at 100%. Even though the GPU temps seemed relatively high, I don't think it's the them causing the freezes as I've tried using a certain flash game which brings the uses up 100% of the CPU whereas the GPUs naturally remain uneffected. Personally, I'm suspecting a problem with the fan controll due to this finding :

After some cleaning measurements, I've tried unplugging the SLI cable and have the system run without it. The result was, that the GPUs' fan kicked in at full speed when in fact it was the CPU that was running on high temperatures, leaving the CPU fan at a "guessed" 70% of it's max RPM instead of fully kicking in. When reconnecting the SLI cable, the GPUs' fan remained at around the same 70% of its max RPM as the CPU.

So I would need to access to fan controll in some way to regulate it and manually turn it up when I go play games.. With such a solution I would be happy enough. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any software being compatible with the Aurora m9700 mainboard and thus, couldn't access the fan controll.

It's not the first time I'm encountering heat issues with this notebook. However, the last time, AW-support sent me a set of new heatsinks which solved the probs some months ago (I'm pretty sure it was the hardened heatsink compound on the chipsets though).

The following things I've tried so far:

    1) removing and propper cleaning of heatsinks + fans
    2) putting on new heat sink compound
    3) checking condition of thermal pads (naturally when removing the heatsinks..)
    4) removing the battery before booting (no clue, a friend of mine told me to try it)
    5) reinstalling mainboard- / cpu- / gpu drivers
    6) contacting AW support and yet waiting for an answer (which I will post here as soon as I get one)

So if you have any suggesting to fix this, I would be reaaally happy ;)

    Greets,
    tabtab

Welcome to the Overheaters Club. My m9700 has overheated so badly that it melted the ac input cable and the input to the mobo. I've done all the steps you listed and even use it with the service panel removed(yes I'm careful).
About the only thing I can figure out is that the cards just get too hot and the HS/fan can't distribute the heat correctly. Nvidia even acknoldeged this and has been recalling cards with most manufactures. My lappy is approaching 2years old and has another few months of realistic use. It's total BS that a $2k laptop can't last. I've built custom PC's that have no troubles at all, and yet I've fallen victim to AW's shiny tag.

I wouldn't be surprised to see AWxxxx(whoever) chime in and request you to PM him with the details. It's crap because they pick and choose what help to give, and then they never reply back to the thread.

I guess were SOL mate. I'll never make the AW mistake again!
