I'm looking at buying an M17x and I've seen the various threads here about the deals people have been able to get in the US.
Are there any Aussies here that have been able to get a good deal with Dell, or are we stuck paying list price? (other than the EPP discount)

Pretty sure its EPP only mate.

Tried to get a coupon for mine and couldnt find it, and the sales reps I called were rock solid on the price.

Couldnt even get the bag for free. So lousy.

You might be able to find discounts on them occasionally from here: Dell - OzBargain

There's no ongoing promotion for the M17x listed at the moment though.

Edit: Yup, I tried negotiating for them to throw in a bag for free, but no luck there!

    Thanks everyone.

I had a feeling that this might be case.

If you're interested in a M15x, JBhifi has started selling these recently, the deal's not bad and you get a decent specs.

    Link h ere

On the plus side, you save about $600 from jb, as opposed to Dell.

On the down side, I think its a HD 5730 rather than a 5750.. but if thats the only downside.. I think you're doing fine.

I know its not a M17x, but there really aren't discounts available to the average Australian for Alienware's...

I thought I'd let you know how the negotiations are going.

I put together the following on the Australian Store.
Please note that the Aus Store does not have as many options as the US store, so there is no choice on some things like the wireless card and the anti-virus software.

    Cosmic Black M17x
    Intel Core i7 - 740QM
    17-inch WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 RGB LED (1200p)
    Windows 7 Professional 64bit
    6GB (1 x 2GB + 1 x 4GB) 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    1TB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive (500GBx2)(Raid 0)
    Slot Load Fixed Blu-ray BD-ROM / DVD + /-RW Combo Drive
    CrossFireX™ Dual 1GB GDDR5 ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5870
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Internal Mini-Card
    Dell Wireless 1520 802.11n Half Mini-Card
McAfee Security Centre - 15 months
    3-Year Premier Service

    The store Price was AU$3529.
On the phone I was able to get it down to AU$3176. (10% off)

Today I configured up the same specs at the US store. (i7-720 instead of i7-740) for a price of US$3502.
Using XE Currency rates at the time of writing of AU$1.00 = US$0.8968 that's AU$3905.

So it seems that we're already getting around 9.5% off of the US prices. (Depending on exchange rates)

So my price of AU$3176 is around US$2847 which is about 18.5% off the US Store price. (Plus a better processor)

So I think I've either got a pretty good deal :) , or I've made a complete mess of the configurations and currency conversions. :(

Anyone want to check my work and tell me if I should be happy or sad?

    Hmm.

Personally I would get the cheapest HDD's they have and buy them separate myself. That should save you a bit more than that anyway. Get the dual 320's included, then buy a 640gig from somewhere and get a 64gb ssd as well - infinitely better performance.
If you go the SSD route get a cheaper SSD with average 4k randoms, like the indilinx drivers, as the R2 currently has slow 4k random performance.

Other than that, I got the exact same system (but with the 320's and a i7 720) for $3120, without discount, so I would say they have jacked their prices up since i bought mine a month ago.

All in all, a pretty good deal though. I would be happy with it myself.

    Go for it!

On the Australian store, dual 500GB HDDs are the cheapest option. :) (Raid 0 or 1)

I plan to look at changing the drives at a later date, I think they'll be fine for a while.

Same for the processor and memory.

Dell wants an additional AU$1225 fro an i7-940XM which just isn't going to happen.
And an extra AU$225 to bump the memory up to 8GB.
(Note: Prices don't include any discount)

The prices have indeed been bumped up - the base price of the spec I purchased is more expensive now.

I was able to haggle a bit of a discount but when I was shopping around Dell reps for the Asia Pacific region had almost no delegation to offer discounts.

If you were able to haggle a 10% discount - you're doing very well. Just make sure you go over your quote with a fine tooth comb.

Regarding EPP discounts - the Alienware and Adamo ranges are apparently ineligible for EPP discount in Australia (unless that has changed in the last couple of months).

    Good luck!

From what the rep was saying 10% is the maximum they can give, and she had to get approval from her manager for that.
I've been looking it over and everything seems to right.
Is there anything in particular you think I should be checking for?

Yes it has changed in the last month or so. Depending on the company you are with there is now a 5% or an 8% code.

When I was haggling discounts I'd get a revised quote for a lower price, but kept noticing that the warranty period had dropped from 3 years to 1 or 2. When I pointed out the discrepancy I received a quote for the lower price and everything listed correctly.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt but it wouldn't hurt to make sure it matches exactly what you asked for before payment.

That's surprising (and a little irritating ) considering only a few months ago I was told there were no plans to open up Alienware/Adamo to EPP. Great news for new buyers though.
