Good afternoon all,
Some of you have been asking for control over your fans and a means to manage profiles for them on the Alienware 18. We've enabled a means for you to go ahead and do so. Do note: We DO NOT endorse the use of HWiNFO32/64. We highly recommend you do not go down this path without prior knowledge of fan control use as improper fan manipulation beyond the default parameters we have set can cause issues to your system that may not be covered under the system warranty. Please ensure that you are using BIOS A10 before going through with the following steps.
1. Download the latest build of HWiNFO32 or HWiNFO64
2. Run and open the Sensors menu.
3. On machines supported by fan control, a fan icon is displayed at the bottom of the sensors window. Click this icon to access the Fan Control.
4. From there, you should be able to manipulate the fan speeds as you need. You cannot control them individually in these profiles, only all at once.
Again, I do caution care as you decide to change the fan settings.

You are the man! Thank you!
Maxwell 18 r2 PLEASE!!! Make the bios as free as fhe 15xTBoneSan likes this. -
Alienware manager AW KHAN will teach us to use Hwinfo64 instead of fixing the broken / useless fan profile in the Alienware 17R1 Ranger and Alienware 18 Viking. This is pretty pathetic .. Use nor the time to instruct Alienware software engineers to fix bios / Ec so fans start when they should and with appropriate speed ..

Bit late, I don't think Khan is a manager, though from what I recall.

Why do we need two use thirdparty software on Alienware 17 and 18 ? Because Dell fails to fix the fan profile problem? Dell should fix the obvious problem with the fan profile in bios / Ec for long time ago. Fans starts too late and too little aggressive when the temperature and wattage increases rapidly. The fans start after the temperature has gone down(and same noise anyway). A delay of several seconds. What good is that fans start when the temperature has already gone down? The fans start eg not when the temperature has reached 65 degrees. Cpu fan starts when the temperature is stabilized down at low 40-45 degrees after the temp increase. Total idiocy. Cpu fan should increase speed instantly with temperature increase and increased wattage and not when the temperature has already gone down. This is an unnecessary delay of the fans. This applies especially CPU fan. You get just as much noise of the fan when it starts after or before the temperature rise. idiocy..Remember that all Alienware laptop owners in several laptop forum have complained about this problem with all bios / Ec versions Dell give us . Too little agresive and delayed start of the cpu fan for over 1.5 years . In addition, other manufacturers have created their own software with possibility of manual fan control to their gaming laptops in addition( Their own software not thirdparty fan software) to the fan controller in bios / ec. This should Dell managed to create inside the Alien Command Center for long time ago.
PSThe cpu fan is also restricted to 4600 rpm but it goes 5200rpm under bios flashing in Alienware 17 Ranger).

Good work Kahn! Now let's see some Legacy Maxwell support for m18 r1/2, AW18reborn2003 likes this. -
Hasn't this method existed since the first M17x?

The original post said they enabled a means for us to do so. Wasn't it already enabled to use hwinfo to begin with . A member here at nbr (theghosts) tought me that a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.
Edit: ok maybe not in a galaxy far far away that would be lying.Last edited: Feb 28, 2015 -

To be honest though, I don't quite understand why posting a "solution" that people should already know about, then making sure to claim its not endorsed by Dell/Alienware. Why not take ownership as a company instead and actually endorse a solution that works with their own tools? Why not actually fix the problem when it exists? People shouldn't have to have work arounds, Alienware should make it work for them.

Even with this my laptop overheats several minutes into gaming, also with under-laptop fans. Aptly done.
EDIT: probably gonna' sell this AW18 junker and get a clevo. M18r2 was a godsend, this is a nightmare. -
Actually, it was Alienware 18 BIOS A07 when this became possible. I posted solutions for overclocking problems and manual fan controls using HWiNFO64 in May of 2014. Here is link to the post in the A07 discussion thread: Circumventing Alienware 18 BIOS Overclocking Limitations and Implementing Manual Fan Controls. I think I may have posted this in the Alienware Club at Dell Community as well.

MahmoudDewy Gaming Laptops Master Race!
Has anyone used HWinfo method on 17-R1 & had no problems with crazy latency ?
I tried every possible trick in the book and still the DPC latency is crazy ... That being said when setting both fans to spin at LVL-01 2k rpm continuously from 0-50C & then LVL-02 speed for each after 50C makes the laptop as cold as a freezer that sometimes I feel I am using a completely different laptop ... But with the insane latency the sound is ugly so I can't use it
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

To avoid DPC latency problem you must disable all EC support (Dell and Compal EC).

EDIT/UPDATE: I tried again and wow it worked this time. I can use the fan control even after disabling both of the ECs!Last edited: Mar 2, 2015reborn2003 and Mr. Fox like this.
