I'm interested in buying an Alienware laptop for gaming but i'm waiting for a killer promo so in the meaning time I have a few questions regarding Alienware. :hi2:

    1) What is the difference between the models? I see laptops which can come with different numbering schemes such as R1, R2, R3 etc. What do those numbers stand for?

    2) Is there a massive size difference between the M17x and the M18x? As a gamer bigger is better but price is a factor, which is why I ask.

    3) I've read that Alienware laptops use GPU sockets that allow you to upgrade the GPU? Does that apply for all Alienware laptops or just the M17x and M18x?

    4) Where do you buy future GPU's i.e. if I buy a M18x with a 680m and I want to upgrade to the unannounced 690m?

    5) How reliable are the Alienware laptop's? I ask because these are performance devices and not your typical Dell laptops.

    6) Is it better to buy from XoticPC or Dell? I see there are a ton of customization options with XoticPC but not sure how warranties are handled?

Different revisions of the same model. Like my R2 comes with an i7-920XM, the R3 with an i7-2740QM, and the R4 with an i7-3840QM. Each newer revision has updated specs and is equipped with newer CPUs, GPUs, etc.

Can't really answer that one in detail. The obvious difference is screen size, the m17x being 17", the m18x being 18". Another thing to consider is starting with the m17x R3, you can only have a single GPU whereas with the previous m17x R2, you could use two GPUs in Crossfire/SLI mode. When the m17x R3 was release, the dual GPU option was transferred over to the m18x line. Currently the m18x is the only Alienware notebook which comes with the dual GPU option. So that's definitely something to consider since you're a gamer.

Just the m17x and m18x. IIRC, the m15x was equipped with MXM GPUs, but I'm not sure and since that model was discontinued, its a moot point. But yes, the m17x and m18x both uses MXM video cards, where the GPU is on a PCIe card type called an MXM. Whilst physically interchangeable, some GPUs don't work as well in some models as the would in others.

Alienware/Dell will sell the GPU upgrades. Also Eurocomm or their eBay store (upgradeyourlaptop eBay storefront). Also, Clevo has the same MXM GPUs which some users around here prefer because the Clevo GPUs seem to perform better when overclocked.

They're big, they're bulky. I compare them to a drag racer. When they run, they smoke the competition. When they fail, they fail spectacularly. As long as you don't run rampant in your Alienware's circuits, there's no more chance for it to go bad than any other Dell system.

Dell's always gonna have a price mark-up. I haven't seen XoticPC's prices to form an opinion on if they're a better value for the Alienware laptops or not. I would think you should shop around to places other than the two you just listed. I know there are several resellers who deal in Alienware notebooks whom post here in the forums. Might wanna check thems out and see what deal(s) they can offer y'all.

Thanks Radji for the informative answers, much appreciated. :hi2:

Was there a killer GPU promo I missed out on? I read in another thread that Dell had a crazy GPU promo that expired.

Thanks Mr. Fox for the additional info. Based on your info I think I will deal with Dell directly and will probably pickup the M18x. Aluminum rocks.

You mentioned negotiating when buying from Dell. What kind of negotiating is Dell known to offer it's Alienware customers? Is this something that should be done over the phone or via chat?

Probably more effective by phone versus chat. And, you may need to talk to more than one sales rep. Some are more flexible than others. Remember, they are sales people. Some want to maximize profit on just a few sales and others make more money by focusing on volume, giving bigger discounts. If you're not happy with the deal, talk to someone else. It is not uncommon to see discounts up to 25% when EPP, special sales or coupons are involved.

Did you see the two threads devoted to this subject? Here are the links:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/669327-alienware-sales-assistance-thread-redux.html - this thread is to get a price quote from special sales reps for members of this forum

http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/456885-aw-dell-ordering-advice-how-save.html - this thread has tips on how to negotiate the purchase price (but only if not using the thread above for a quote)

Be sure the read the opening posts in both threads first.

To add to Fox's recommendations: if you're not satisfied with the sales reps giving you a good discount on a new system, consider a reman system from the Dell Outlet. My R2 was a reman from the Dell outlet and it's worked great (apart from the power jack coming loose and the optical drive behaving badly). The big difference with the reman systems is they only come with a 90 day warranty so if you want more warranty protection, you're gonna have to pay extra for it. But sometimes you can get a great deal on a higher end configuration from the outlet just because its a reman. Just something to take into consideration.

I have NO problems with products from the outlet store. I've purchased several laptops from Dell already. I had checked and there were no M17x or M18x available.

Is there a certain time of year that Dell offers crazy Alienware promo's on new systems? :)

Not necessarily a special time, although holidays and "back to school" sales are common. If you hook up with them on Facebook or Twitter, you can get notified about discounts and promos. Try calling the Outlet and see if they have systems available that are not displayed online. They may have what you are looking for even though it is not listed on the web site. You can call (877) 907-3355 8AM to 11PM CST.

With respect to new systems, with the right sales rep, you can negotiate deals that may be better than promotional discounts, but they may not be able to combine the two in some cases. I have also seen examples where people obtained component upgrades or accessories (i.e. backpacks, TactX peripherals), extended warranty, etc. where further discounts were not possible.

Most lower level sales representatives aren't authorized to give special deals, hell, some may not even be aware they can give additional discounts (depending on where the call center is). You'll have to ask for a manager who will be able to do pretty much anything with your order. The most I've ever heard of someone saving is 30%, which I find hard to believe myself.

As they said above, you should call the outlet. Sometimes there are great deals.
