Is it possible that if I'm on battery only, the laptop's wifi signal is of shorter range?

    Thanks

I take it you mean no battery but connected via power adapter? If this is the case, wifi strength should but at 100% when power plan mode is changed to "high performance". Usually when you are on battery only, you are probly on "balanced performance" or "power saver" mode. When using these two modes, wifi strength is somewhat a little weaker.
