Im in the market for the m17x... waiting till Aug or when ever they refresh with 5870's. I was wondering what if/how much better is the battery life if you have SSD's rather than standard hard drives. Also what brand does dell use for 256gb?

Pretty sure they use Samsung drives.
As for battery life, an SSD will always consume less power than a regular spindle hard drive. Obviously a 7200 rpm drives uses more power than a 5400rpm drive so its all relative to the drive that you compare. -
ive heard/read that the batterly with standard hard drive is approx 1-2 hours. Will SSD's add 30min to 1hr? Also how reliable are SSD's? Are the Samsung drives better than Intels?

In my opinion and from the review's I've read intel ssd's have the best reliability. I have never had any issues with my 80gb g2. They aren't the fastest drives on the market though and they are a little costly. I haven't heard anything bad about the dell/samsung one's, but i'm not sure if they support trim, which is super important for longevity of the drive.
As for battery life I haven't seen any data on exactly how much additional time you can get using an ssd. I guess it depends on how much you are accessing the hard drive. If you are just surfing the net it probably won't be make much of a difference, but if you are encoding a movie or copying a lot of files on the go i'm sure it will add a decent amount. -
Reliability... SSDs literally blow away hard drives for reliability. If you get an ssd for your system, the chances are you will be moving the ssd into your next system or even the one after that as they are practically indestructable.
Hope this helps...
Les
EDIT: With respect to the Intel drive, they technically can be listed as the biggest VISIBLE bang for your buck as there high random writes blow away all but 2 other drives and allow the Intel to soar to the top of most benchmars in overall testing. -
thanks for all the replies. Ive read their are some problems on the C300 drive with loss of performance.... are all SSD's suseptible to this?
Battery life with SSD? Also what brand does dell currently use?
