Time to try another contest. Benchmarking has slowed down a bit so hopefully this will bring more interest.
So here we go, another 3DMark06 contest!
....because it's CPU dependent! In my mind it is much more interesting to OC a CPU than a GPU. Plus you'll still need a high GPU OC to win this contest.
The prize for the contest is this Dell XPS Backpack.
![]()
Originally designed for the XPS M1730 this bag can hold your M15x/M17x notebook with no issues. It is huge. I only used it once and that was just to see how much I could fit in there. Since then it's been sitting by my desk at home collecting dust.
What you have to do......
Beat this score ( 17191) if you have a single GPU notebook.
and if you have Crossfire/SLI beat this score ( 21987)
One Caveat to this, I will be playing along also so if I beat the score then the score for someone to win the bag will go up.
Rules
1. The contest will be open to ANY laptop.
2. I don't care which GPU/CPU you have but they must be classified as mobile parts. Yes the Crossfire 5870s will count towards the contest assuming they come sometime soon.
3. You must post screen shots of both CPU-Z and GPU-Z or a similar program.
4. Rules subject to change if need be.
5. Contest will end May 31st 2010. If either score has not been surpassed I will close the contest unless there is still interest in it.
6. Contest is open to anyone in the world but I will only pay for shipping within the US. Anywhere else there will be a shipping fee via FedEx.
Good luck and have fun!!

The only realistic way of beating the single GPU score is a G73 with the 920xm....
-
That's why I opened it to all systems. The winner will probably have Crossfire 5870s.
Edit: you won't beat either without a 920XM. -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
i may have to buy an alienware to win the backpack lol.
-
No 980X in this contest. -
That's not fair, I've got processors from one generation ago and GPUs from two generations ago
I'd love to have one of those backpacks. -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
and put your laptop inside the freezer and live it there when you run the benchmarks -
damn it i already have one of those.
-
Mandrake, will you at least dust off the back pack before you send it to the winner?
-
Its impossible to beat Rengsey's score, he was using the A01 bios, which had the flickering due to the PSU not being able to provide adequate power, so it did not have a limit for the CPU power, where as the A02 does.
-
-
Can't even break 16k in 06 with the newer nvidia drivers + vista. 3dmark 06 would ben exactly the same with a dual core so its lame
.
also this contest has ATis name all over it.
maybe use a benchmark that is fairly equal? Crysis? -
No 980X? But it is a notebook part, in the 9280 at least.
-
-
kinda new to cpu oc'ing any tips.
-
-
-
So what is the pll for m15x?
-
setsfb!! lol
-
-
I had the A01 on my system, but i never tried it out, because i noticed everyone having the flickering. -
-
No one with the A02 bios has even come close to Rengsey's score. The flickering was more likely a problem with the PSU, rather than what they suggested, and they wanted a quick fix, rather than spending thousands replacing all the PSUs. If i remember correctly rengsey's PSU was ruined after all the benchmarking, or at least something was wrong with it. I could be wrong

almost there!

this back pack works great for the m17x.that's what i keep mine in. You will have plenty of space for other e if you win it with the M15x. here is the best i have done so far with 06.

There is a hint in my screen shot on how to improve the score.

Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Weekend is here, I'm going to see what I can do.
-
Im guessing xp?
So how far along are you with your benchmarks?
-
-
-
I hit 21k in 3DMark06 but unfortunately until I figure out why I cannot change my drivers like I did with my 1st M17x w/4870s I'm kind of handcuffed to Dell's OEM drivers. Anyone out there who just got this system have the same problem?
-
with what settings, and can it go any further with the CPU?
-
Settings were 29x4@140Mhz and 650/1120 GPU OC. How high are you getting your GPU core right now? -
Whenever i did a benchmark i ran it at 675/1140. I never tried it with any higher settings. I know each CPU can OC further than others but how come my multipliers dont go up to 29 or 28?
EDIT: found this on a wiki search
When the processor is operating below its thermal and electrical limits and the user's workload demands additional performance, the processor clock frequency will dynamically increase in increments of 133 MHz on short and regular intervals until a thermal or power limit is reached or the maximum speed for the number of active cores is reached. Conversely, when any of the limits are reached or exceeded, the processor frequency will automatically decrease in increments of 133 MHz until the processor is again operating within its limits. -

You can also remove the keyboard to allow more airflow around the GPU's
Right in front of an A/C. At least thats how I used to do it.
-
Coming from the guy who put his laptop in the fridge
-
My AC blows up from the bottom. I have a modular desk so it allows me to separate it and have the system hover right over the cooled air.
-
If i supply the PSU with a 3000 watt supply, will that make a difference, or will it ruin the PSU?
-
Can you describe the setup you have in mind? because I don't think it's possible
-
Well its basically a unit that supplies, 3000 watts but with the same voltage, i bought it today for a coffee machine, but can i use the same unit for the laptops PSU?
-
-
Agree with mandrake, keep in mind that the PSU has a specific output and the motherboard operates within limits so by exceeding them will harm your laptop
