I am still trying to established how easy it is to get the processor and replace it. I used to build and test motherbaords and build extra ram in the 1970s so it is dead simple to do it, ised to have the ram soldered on the memory boards etc. Was wondering if anyone else has done the upgrade.

Replacing the processor on your m17 should be easy, since it's easily accessible as well. However, upgrading yourself would 100% void your AW warranty.

You could get a ES processor as well if you want to upgrade which would cut the price quite a bit (you have to know how to shop for ES processors though). Anyways...

I would say that the best AW laptop is the M17x (if we're talking about gaming and that's it). The M17 definitely is better for more multimedia stuff as the processor selection is much better compared to the M17x.

    hi riki!

if you're trying to decide between m17 and m17x, the decision boils down to these two questions:

    1) Nvidia or ATI? some people prefer one GPU manufacturer over the other, for whatever reasons (Nvidia usually has better driver support, but the ATI cards in the m17 are enormously powerful).

    2) do you need absolute reliability? the m17x, while not featuring the newest technology or the best benchmark scores, has just about zero issues, and has been praised by many for it's great build quality and low heat emissions. the m17, on the other hand, is the more powerful notebook, and while it also has very good build quality, there have been some issues regarding reliability in the past.

i hope those two questions will help you find a notebook :)

if i had to make the decision, i would wait a few more weeks until Alienware releases the m17 with the new ATI HD4870 GPU - rumor has it that it won't cost much more, but the HD4870 (or rather, two of them) should perform even better than the already powerful HD3870s now.

mmh...intersting. I love the m17x chassis(also the 15),for reliability in your well said words, and I don't understand why they don't upgrade to montevina platform.they don't make also any special price on it.
I had to buy it from U.K.,France or German and this time I had not to fail,
my daughter still joke me about my new Toshi(only superb sound). I gave her my old beatiful ACERFerrari an example of top class workmanship.
    your opinion?

I'm going to pop in real quick and say that the m15x is great if you treat it well. Haven't had much time lately to come around but I'm about 8 months in with my m15x now and still have not encountered a single major issue.

Take care of your m15x, and it will take care of you!

I was going through the posting on the forum and responses, the good question was whats the difference between the M17 and M17x and the response is the ATI and Nvidia. Well i checked and was wondering if the differences between the processors Q9100 and the QX9300 and that the ram ddr2 (slower) and ddr3, i suppose will make the M17 faster. Interestingly the prices are compatiable for a more finer tuned laptop it will be the M17 for about the same price.

I am just wondering if the opinion of ddr2 at 667Mhz vs DDR3 1066 is is just a marketting hyper. If it is eitherway, it will be good to reading peoples opinion on this issue.

Was thinking if the responses was indirectly looking at the possibility of upgrading the specs to match, is the upgrade a real costing savings. A thought i been playing with, the present ecomonic down turn some how the alienware warranty is not worth much considering the downsizing of the big names.

I been looking at various manufacturers, such as Dell, Sager, Rock and many others, if you spec them against Alienware for the same, Alienware comes out the cheapest. Shocking really but true for the M17 but the joy is there to justify buyng alienware.

On the SSD drives, I had a looked at prcing Alienware pricing for M17 to come with SSD, well its a good price. If you do the upgrade yourself it does cost more looking at the prices from ebay. I tend to agree that the wait for the price for the ssd to come down is a good idea. I do wonder what the present economic downturn will affect pricing or releasing new technology or dowe expect less chances of see cost saving techcnologies hitting the market until the public confidence to spend go up.

The other is thought is that the issue of realization that great recession as there is no economic word for Depression except the world wide recession does make everyone depressed. Will we be looking at using our laptop till it dies and expect games manufacturers to make better games by coding better and tighter codes. perhaps it is good for our pockets to be more conservative?

I guess I kicked started various topics in this posting. My guess is that Alienware is good quality stuff, love to hearing responses on quality. Well the Alienware warranty is another interesting issue, if they go out of business who gets to honour the warranties. So as long as the quality of the product is good, should be worry about warranty.

A good alternative is the ASUS G71V QX9300 laptop is worth looking at if your in another country other then the UK. In the UK is marketting for past 3 months and always out of stocking. Romours ASUS and ACER in the UK has no idea of distribution and deliveries, dealers are not taking deliveries. perhaps the US and the Far East including Australia are. But specwise is not near M17 no dual gpus but its a cheaper alternatives.

Its also very interesting to note that the price difference betwen alenware Uk and US is about $1000 usd in the UK and additions will knock the price difference. Well if the way the pound and dollar equalises perhaps the difference will be less then 1K. On the UK site M17 with Vista 64 there is no personisation where as in the US it is available for a while. Kind of hard to understand why since the software and hardware are the same. Oh its we just across the pond perhaps thats why. Spoken to alienware on this difference bottom line i suppose TOUGH!!! They did say you can download the personisation when its becomes availableoutside the US.

Oh yes the conv with Alienware is to up grade to the qx9300 if you buying a l;owe spec processor is that they are now asking to return the laptop to base for the enhancement, i been advised it is the heart of the puter like opne heart surgery, Alienware will be operating so it takes a week to do so.

Well all those are my personal investigations into whether to buy one with full trimmings or a lower spec one and DIY. Yes warranty goes down the drain i suppose, worrying if Alienware will be here well economic recovery or will it get abducted and leave the planet to go home.

I still think the M17 is worth buyingbut its the pricing on the qx9300 which is over the top. Hence the question of DIY and forget about the warranty. I used to do designa dn test microcomputer in the old days with Zen, DEC rainbows, PCs 8086 etc and kept my hand in this since. So was concern with the accessibility and ease of putting back the heat sink afterwards. Any detailed advice will be much appreciated, thinking of getting the bottom processor and putting in the new one asap.

The reason for the posting is to provide information to get responses on the various ideas as posted. If there is not. assuming that DDR2 is slower and the cpu is slowed down by it then M17 appears to be the better buy. You'r paying about the same price range. Hoping to hear from others on their opinion. It nice to know different views.

Chaz did a review of the m17 and reported 1 hour and 50 minutes...his test rig was pretty decked out too. I haven't tested the limit, but that time frame seems right.
