To anyone out there that may have any advice or who has experienced the following, your help would be very much appreciated.
I woke up this morning and routinely turned on my computer. I punched in my password and then when it changed page to my desktop screen everything was black and nothing worked. After a while a blue screen popped up saying there had been a serious error and that the computer would have to restart. It then restarted and directed me to safe mode which brought me back to my desktop allbeit with a completely reduced functionality, and it is through this i am writing this. I have tried several times to restart the normal way to no avail. Alienware tech guys tried booting it up and repairing problems from cd but it did nothing. They now suggest doing a complete alienware respawn. Has anyone else had this and if so, did this measure help the problem. Any info or advice would be great. I find it hard to be the hardware as the laptop is only a few months old and is hardly taxed by me, the odd games which worked fine and normal browsing and writing essays???
    Thanks
    Harry

this is called a BSoD (Blue Screen of Death). it basically means something's gone wrong and is seriously messed up. so i guess a complete respawn might be a good idea.

It's not good, but doesn't mean it's necessarily serious. I doubt it's got asnything to do with your hardware - it's probably just be a driver conflict. Have you installed any new hardware or updated your drivers recently? Whizzo is right - reinstall windows and it'll be fine. A pain in *** but not the end of the world. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice guys, am going to do the re-install later on today with the tech guys from alienware and fingers crossed it will get rid of problem. Without knowing what the conflict is though, how do i stop it happening again? I don't even remember adding anything new or updating anything, the most recent update being a windows vista update the day before, or maybe that morning, i can't remember.

If you want to at least recover from such problems in the future you should have a backup of your system so that you can go back to a previous stable state. I use Acronis http://www.acronis.co.uk/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ or you could use system restore in vista or get another program that allows you to do this.

do you happen to have a razor mouse by any chance? i have the deathadder and whenever i plug the mouse into the usb port when the computer is on i get this so called BSoD so it always has to be plugged in before i turn on the notebook. I guess its a driver issue in this case but im not sure if the same is applicable to your case.

    READ!!!

I had this problem, and it was vista, not the hardware. It's one of these things that just happen. System restore didn't work, or safe mode - only command prompt, but the chkdsk didn't work - it crashed.

I ended up reformatting, and installing XP. It's been working even better (probs because I hated vista). The performance increase is so noticeable when you drop from vista, it's quite amazing :p
