Guys I'm having an internal struggle... Should I buy the m11x now or wait for the inevitable revision?

I don't NEED it now for any particular reason, but it's just sooo attractive, and would be nice to have for my travel later this year. Of course, my Dell mini10 netbook fills travel needs (but can't handle gaming)..

    Arrgg!! Please help!

Since this thing is basically a toy, the only question for anyone is:

    do you want one now?

    Yes?

    buy one.

You can dump it on ebay or something later and get a revision if you like.

M11x rocks. An update will be months away and then the improvement will probably be small, unless the form factor is being increased and then it would of course no longer be the M11x... Perhaps an M12 or 13X?

Not to mention i7 chips will not be SU7300 price until about this time next year. If the M11x gets a refresh, it will probably be the SU9600. Not a big difference. M11x clocked at 1.6ghz is super stable anyways since has the ceiling (needs to be 1.73ghz like Asus). SU9600 I believe does not have the same ceiling level for clocking up- at least as far as stability.

I have been chomping at the bit as well....If they made a red one I would have already had mine. Sad, but if I get one I want it to match my m17x....I am just corny like that..

I didn't mention this in my original post, but I too would love to see the red color. My Dell Mini is cherry red and it just looks so sexy...

Dell isn't known for keeping their offering on the cutting edge.

    I wouldn't expect an update till Q4

I bought it a month ago and just got it yesterday. I am loving the thing. Can't imagine gaming on the go without it.

If you are really drooling buy it now. There is always going to be an update around the corner as technology doesn't stand still but as has been mentioned I would not expect an update so soon.

So far for the games that I have tried there is no real reason to wait. If you are using it as a portable game device using the built in resolution the spec is perfect. If you are going to drive an external monitor you might have some issues depending on the resolution but for the price and size you certainly can not complain.

Most of those are unlikely. Chances are in 6-8ish months we may see a processor refresh to the iX cores, but I wouldn't expect any major changes to the GPU or core feature set for 12+ months.

Forget that ... the next revision of the M11x better have a Zip drive! I need those disks with a MASSIVE 100MB storage capacity.

In all seriousness, I suspect that when the next revision of the M11x comes out (which won't be for a VERY long time) it will "probably" include Nvidia Optimus (unless ATI comes up with a better alternative), USB 3.0, 4GB of RAM at the base config, and "maybe" a matte screen option (only because I know there are a lot of Alienware engineers who have been trying to make that happen).

I doubt there's enough demand for DLNA or a larger touchpad ... and there's absolutely no way that Dell/Alienware is going to squeeze an optical drive into an 11-inch notebook.

IMO, the SL9600 @ 2.1 GHZ should've been a user selectable option, for those willing to pay more and lose some battery life for better performance (like on the Adamo).

The only foreseeable reason this wasn't done was either because of the tremendous deal Dell likely got on the SU7300's from Intel or because of heat issues. If heat was the issue, to me, it's all the more reason Dell should've made the system the "m12x" or "m13x."

Honestly, say it was announced with the 12.1inch screen, none of you here would be complaining the "system is too big."

While I like the form factor, I would've gladly accepted a slightly (repeat slightly) larger chasis that could support better cooling and a stronger processor.

Other companies are proving this to be more than possible. I do like the system, it's well built and fun, but benchmarks prove the 7300 holds back the 335m (bottlenecks it).

Wait until more laptops release with this video card and are paired with a stronger processor, you'll see just how much of a beast the 335m actually is (for a mid range card considering all specs, it's a fantastic card).

^ Now I'm REALLY torn. Is it bottlenecked that much?

I'm not sure why this is such a difficult decision...

the current m11x form factor can fit a 13in screen. also in a few months other companies will jump into the ultraportable gaming bandwagon which will probably showcase better specs and will lower the prices even more for this catagory.

Dell isnt part of the DLNA standard and there is no room for an internal optical drive...unless you want no battery life - remember this is basically still a netbook but one thats on something :)
