So I just got my M17x this weekend and I love it.
I just now discovered a possible problem. I just got MS Office to install onto this beast and when I inserted the disc into the BD-RE CDrom device it starts an annoying and very noticable buzzing/vibrating.
Is this normal?
One other random question: randomly the function keys seem to not be working. I'm not sure if it's the fact that I'm charging my laptop or not but for example: fn+F5 does not reduce the brightness and it also no longer displays those translucent images of the functions.
Also the Alt + Tab menu comes up and goes away instantly when I try to use it.
Any ideas?

Have you tried other media?
I also noticed a similar issue with my Microsoft Office install disc. Some discs just aren't as balanced as others - at least this has been my experience. MS Office disc 1 has always sounded like it was going to launch, no matter what system I was installing to (XPS M1710, XPS M1730, M17x).
If you find this is happening will all of your discs, then call Dell and have them replace the drive. -
Yeah it seems like it was the disc.

Yep.
Welcome to slot-loading drives
They are picky with discs and can be VERY noisy depending on the print/label on the disc. I once had a sticker on one of my dvd's and it about popped the screws out of the chassis it was vibrating so much! -
Also, be sure you are using BIOS A02. A01 can produce a conflict with the current OSD version. -
Well I thought I was running A02 but apparently not. After I installed it my computer wouldn't boot up anymore. Like.. the screen is black with a flashing underscore after the intel/alienware boot up screen. I guess I'm going to put the installer on a flash drive and boot it up from there and see how that goes..

and now I'm getting an OS not found message. gggggreat.
edit: nevermind I got it.
thanks!
