sure there is. remove backplate, remove heatsink, switch CPUs, re-apply thermal grease, re-attach heatsink, re-attach backplate. done.

    Mike2011,

if you are not familiar in doing such process, it is highly recommended that it is done by Alienware only to avoid voiding the system's warranty.

hehe i daresay Mike's past being concerned about his warranty :D

as for the heatsink screws, you should see four flathead (?) screws connecting the heatsink to the mobo (over the CPU). unscrew these and remove the heatsink to access the CPU.

you won't, it's fairly obvious which screws belong to the heatsink.

While I haven't tore that deep into my M17 yet, is there any way AW would "know" if you tampered with the CPU? Is there a seal? A lot of computers I see have the screws dipped in a blue sealant (I have this sealant if needed). Whats to stop you from swapping the old CPU in if something blows up? Cause if there isn't, I'm going to town on this thing.

there isn't any sealant on mine. ergo, nothing stops you from swapping in the old CPU for warranty stuff if necessary. of course, AW now knows you will swap the CPUs.. they're monitoring this forum, you know... with spy satellites... and little microphones and cameras hidden in your lappy...

Well, if you remove the pad from the heatsink and old cpu to install new cpu with another compound, then they will know, unless you use the same pad/compound as them Or not removing the old stuff.

Mike, if you want help, PM me. It's easy. It'll take you 10 minutes from when you turn off your lappy to when you're firing it back up.
