Hi all first post. I have been milling around here for a couple weeks pondering ordering a m15x. I have been waiting to see if the m17x is coming out or if the M15x will have any upgrades to the hardware options. Like memory/harddrive/processor/video/ etc. I am buying this to replace my 5 year old Dell that my wife decided to drop from a distance of about 5 feet. I mainly used it for internet browsing, watching dvds while working/traveling and some light gaming.
If I ordered a bare bones m15x I could probally get away with it, but I am afraid in the future that I will regret not getting the 8800gtx etc. I have a playstation 3 and an xbox 360 so I dont know how much gaming I will be using the laptop for. Anyone regret not getting or upgrading certain aspects of there systems.

You could always get the barebones, and send it in to be upgraded by them
sorry about your dell also :(

Well don't buy the M15x or M17x if you don't intend on doing hard core gaming. If you just want a powerful notebook, click the link in my sig for the M1530 vs. M15x. I would recommend the M1530 for light gaming, email, and a long battery life for DVD watching.

First off welcome to the forums. It would be a big pain to had to send your system back and forth. At the same time If you've been able to live with a dell for 5 years I don't think a basic system would be such a bad idea but I would get the best proc that I could afford. Ram upgrade yourself.

Honestly, I don't see much point in buying an AW if you don't intend to use it for more demanding tasks. I mean if you're into the brand and you like how it looks and essentially...you just want it, then go for it. Otherwise, there are lots of laptops that can probably offer you more mobility, better battery life, and probably more cost effectiveness. Alienwares are targeted almost exclusively to the gaming crowd, so if that's not really what you're looking for, it may be prudent to consider other options.

Feel free to totally disregard this advice though. :)

Callidor is right. You also have to remember that the M15x isn't the standard for factor, it is a larger and heavier than the average 15" notebook.

Thanks for the quick responses. I have been an avid pc gamer for a long time. Building all of the computers that I have used. But I think I am done with building PCs...I was looking at more of replacing my desktop I am using now with a good laptop that will last at least a little while. While I do play mostly first person shooters, I do dabble in warcraft and starcraft style games.
Who knows what the future holds for PC gaming but I would like to have a laptop that could play any future games a year or two from now. I also process alot of large digital images and video from traveling. Also I can say that I have not seen a better looking laptop then the m15x. I am just having a hard time pulling the trigger. Especially if Im replacing my desktop maybe the m17x would be a better choice. Its hard to wait, I already miss having a laptop now and it hasnt been a month. I dont know if i can wait until june/july for the m17x

well if you really are looking for a gaming system, a bare-bones m15x probably won't cut it. its like a 1.7Ghz processor and only 1GB of ram i believe. That said, I think most people would tell you that the m15x is the best bet for gaming..you're just gonna need to crank up a few of the key options. for best gaming longevity, go for the 8800. Obviously, that will do a lot for future proofing your rig. Happy choosing..

Base on your usage. Get the 8800 GTX or u will regret. First person shooters and starcraft style (big fan) played best at PC. With the 8800GTX u will last a good 3 years gaming at incredible graphics.

As for m17x. i feel more like a myth now (No news - totally nothing - zero). Get the m15x and if u need a bigger screen, its only 300 bucks away from a big nice 22" LCD.

Since u are a power user, playing FPS games, Digital processing, need to last for 2 years and best looking laptops. M15x with 8800GTX fits perfectly. GO FOR IT.

Get a Dell XPS M1530. I had one and I could game OK! And I do game a lot...
It's a very nice looking laptop and it can handle all the games (obviously with lots of things turned off) I threw at it! I finished CoD4, Crysis, I played MoHA, Witcher, etc etc...
In my opinion, it's a much nicer looking laptop than the M15x (appart from lights and etc...), smaller and lighter and the support you have is much more "complete"!

If you look into Packer's m15x review thread you'll see that as part of becoming "Collected Evidence" on this AW webpage, he has been promised to review the m17x :D !! The lucky sod
He just doesn't know when ;)

Luck is the right one word for it..... (",)

The M17X will be released or Alienware won't have a flagship gaming laptop to "beat" the competition with.

There's numerous theory's on NBR as to why, i'm thinking it's Montevina they are waiting for but....

Think of the possibilites, 4Gb of DDR3 1066 RAM..... should be enough for Crysis lol

To be honest though none knows when the M17X will be released, it's basically a case of suck it and see..... it will be released eventually though..... or i'll go crazy lol

Hehe.. I have a feeling the AW techs are playing a never-ending game of "Let's wait for the big jumps in technology like Montevina, DDR3-1066MHz RAM, 7lb chassis for 17 inchers........."
Hope someone smacks 'em with a bit of reality soon :p Like maybe the competition ;)

At the moment the competition is Clevo, they are using a desktop processor but it's Qad core so....

I'm hoping that they are waiting for Montevina, it's faster and cooler running as a system then S-R is. The other thing is that the quad Mobile processor only run's on Montevina so....

M17X, Quad....... maybe one day lol

Dang you sound as sad as the alien in your profile pic looks (emotionally of course ;))
All I can say is that I hope they loosen their tongues and start talking about the m17x..

Nah, not sad, i'm actually very impatient but after getting annoyed, am now resigned to the fact that we are subject to the gods that are Alienware's whims.... oblviosly we aren;t being told anything.... perhaps we have offended tham somehow.... maybe we should sacrifice a small goat.... or a mac lol

The avatar has the same nickname as me so...

I'd be happy with an announcement saying that is will be released...... and actually give us a date to look forward to..... please?

I spoke with there online chat service last night and the best they could say was "Trying to get it out before summer, the specs are not finalized yet". You figure they would at least put a "Coming soon spring/summer 2008" on their webpage to let possible customers know that it is on the way. Maybe they are changing the case design and cant show photos of it.

I'm wondering when the m17x will make its appearance too, lately I have been thinking about it more. I mean, November was a long ways back.

Santa Rosa is nearing the end of its life cycle but as we saw in the past with the M9750, that has not deterred Alienware before from releasing products. The M9750 was using an "outdated" platform as soon as it was released almost.

So, I really don't have a clue as to when the m17x will be released. All I was able to get out of Alienware was "soon". Maybe we can dig up some articles/product announcements in the past Alienware has given and find out what they mean by that. ;)

Trouble is, "soon" seems to have a sliding scale of nearness.

The oroginal date was Q1 2008, we're now in Q2 and still no news. I'm still thinking they are waiting for Monty, seems to be the only way they can make a beast to beat all the rest, well until they do the same ha ha ha

My guess is they are waiting for Montevina to release the m17x. Only difference is that I think they are waiting for Montevina and they will release a Santa Rosa platofrm m17x. Thats what they always did no? :D

So "W" you still waiting for the M17X then?

I'm only here as moral support for you guys :)
Yea, no definitives for sure.. At least we'll get a new video of the m17x if they bring it on the show.. Would be great if they say "It's launching tomorrow !!" ;)
