As the title says: can they? Can anyone clear this up for me?

EDIT: So, I called, and apparently I can use the eGift card, but to add three more years of warranty, they want $1,079.44 (as an extension). Um, that's crazy... Buy as much warranty as you can during checkout (aka. "Point of Sale").

I didn't think you could use eGift cards on services, so that's really good to know.

Also, yeah. Warranty extensions are one of their most expensive things. Even still, isn't 4 years accidental + reg about $600 on config?

Yes, I forgot to mention that I already had a year of each. They want $1079.44 for four years total, which is another three years (+3 years for me).

The main reason it's ridiculous, in my case, is because I ordered my system on the premise that I would be able to purchase warranty at the same price as the website with the eGift Cards that came with my system. The representative clearly told me that would be a possibility, but now they are saying it will cost more than $1,000.

This thread can be closed. I basically answered my own question(s) by making a few phone calls. :p

It's been reported that some people have been able to get extended warranty later for no more than when they purchase their system. It seems to be a YMMV type issue since there has also been a ton of reports similar to your case that it costs a ton more afterwards so I've always recommended people always buy it upfront since it's not worth the hassle/risk to gamble on that.

Another reason to buy it upfront is that you may have a larger discount when you bought the original system. It sucks/feels bad to pay so much for nothing physical like warranty, but as we all know, most people have been happy with their extended warranty here...

I think when I bought my 18, the extended warranty costs over $500 alone.

When I still owned my Alienware M17XR2 I was able to contact Dell about a month prior to the warranty expiring and get 2 years for about $200. Now, there was some extensive negotiating and haggling, but I thought it was a pretty good deal so I went with it. However, looking back I would have probably kept the money and just fixed whatever issue / issues decided to present themselves. Glad you got your questions answered!

Yes it's typically safer to get it as it's sold, but if it's fairly new I would try to haggle.

I have extended mine several times, you just need to haggle and tell them you wont take that offer. I used my gift card once but it took some talking saying it was just like cash. Now if I want to extend my old r2 warranty they want to charge me an arm and a leg since they have no parts and they would have to give me a newer system...but that's not my fault..
