Hey Im wondering if the M17 can use the ATI hd4xxx graphic cards cause im buying an M17 in a few days or wondering if I should wait until they can use those if they cant.
-
This topic is a not so easy one^^
Most say it will be possible to add 4870 cards later ...
But all say ... it will take some time untill you can buy themSo don't wait xD
Greetings
Julian -
yeah this topic has been talked to death.. the best answer is just wait and see because no one really knows at this point what alienware will do with the M17 next
-
...but OCZ will support them, yes.
-
you know it all depends what kind of person you are and if you have the patience to wait.
me personally, if i hadnt bought might a lil over 2 months ago and i knew about it for sure, I would have waited... -
I would have waited as well.. but i mean u cant always play the waiting game for technology as u will always continue waiting its just best to pick and choose the best times and a little research
-
-
the laptop WILL support the 4870's the ocz one will and there the same as AW just wait for them to come out
-
-
*I am happy with this solution*

Julian -
some ppl told me that the slots for grapic card in current m17 are MXM HE, and i dont know if its compatible with 4870
-
Just curious..who's "some people"?
-
I dont think the issue will be the 4870's fitting in.. for sure they will "fit"
it will be basicly everythin else.. like power, heat, motherboard compatiable.. etc -
-
Will we get some discount upgrading to the new card?
-
lmao alienware will say no to that and smack you with there huge purse
-
Hi all
Alienware will offer 4870 CS in M17 system:

As we already know from various official sources 4870 will fit and will be fully compatible with Whitebook/M17 chassis.
We still don't know if AW will offer cards as some sort of upgrade program, or even as a spare part to buy from them directly. Dell did it with XPS M1730 (8700M SLI to 8800M GTX SLI).
Did Alienware offered something like that before?
Cheers
Luke -
so ... may be ... but I wouldn't be too optimistic^^
Edit: AW never conformed this! ... OCZ does ...

Julian -
excellent news thanks mak5 for the info.
-
I just want to know if anyone's gonna sell me their 3870's x2 for my M9750!
-
I am not sure whether I buy a 4870 and sell the 3870, but I am still interessted in what I can get for two 3870s?
Greetings
Julian
Edit: I think more than "anyone" will sell their 3870s when the 4870 is released ... -
i think a lot of m17/whitebook owners will be upgrading to HD4870s as soon as they come out... which will flood the market with cheap, used HD3870s which will be eagerly bought by m9750 owners looking to upgrade.
-
Greetings
Julian -
ATI might discontinue the 3870 when the 4870 comes out... at any rate, if you want to get the most money out of your 3870s later on when you sell them, just don't OC them now, as stock cards will sell for more later than cards that have been stressed by higher clock speeds and more heat.
-
And this is a good idea^^ Do you thi´nk the prices of the 3870 will get higher after ATI stoped producing them? Can't belive an old card getting more expensive
Greetings
Julian -
i don't think so... the only people actually wanting the old 3870s will be m9750 owners... can't think of anyone else wanting them... so the market would be small, therefore i don't think prices will go up.
-
Greetings
Julian -
i don't think AW will be offering any sort of trade-in. they'll be happy to take your money for a set of HD4870s, maybe for a reduced price if you already purchased the m17, but definitely not any such trade-in like you said.
-
Selling as well would be awsom but I more or less whanted to know what you expect I get for two 3870s
Greetings
Julian -
oh, right. hmm... well, hard to judge right now, because supply and demand could sway either way... still, i'd think maybe 200$. but that's basically just a WAG.

will you be able to use the same heatzink as 3870 use? does any one know?
-
-
Proably no the 4870 a put off ALOT of heat flextronics have stated there having trouble just keeping them cool. There going to change some stuff to get them ok
-
But I guess, because they have coolingproblems, that they will have to chance something
Greetings
Julian -
-
I mean like fans ... The heat sink can't get any bigger lol
-
the only thing they could do is put in fans that turn faster - they can't physically increase the fan size any more at this point.
-
I kno
that's what I ment more cfm.... I think that short for it.
-
Have you noticed this thread where sb used a different thermal paste and the temps gone a good pice cooler?
May be they only change the thermal paste but I think they will have to change something with the fans as well.
Greetings
Julian -
no if they did put to much thermal paster it can lower it like 5-6 c and with the antec cooler another 5 c so i believe it actually would. It all depends how bad the thermal paste was on there in the first place
there is no way to change the fan speed in the m17 -
) can be changed to make it more effective
Greetings
Julian -
they could do that, yes. at any rate, better fans will probably be necessary - regardless of if they're faster or more efficient (or both
).
-
they would have to find a whole new fan that fit inside the laptop which could be done but might be a problem due to size limitations and voltage.....
does any one know what size fans are in the m17? imma look this theroy upsee if there are more powerful fans that will fit in the m17. Iwonder if it will void you warrenty
but yes julian i understand you( P.S its motor not rotor) -
I think of the thing which rotates^^ Ok the motor rotates as well but I mean the "wings"
Greetings
Julian
PS: I have a ECO 8 (RC Helicopter) and it has a "Rotor" as well. I thought this sounds english so I used this word -
you mean the blades that connect to the motor ...you proably wont be able to cut the blades off then reconnect more efficent ones and get it to run balanced
whoot 1300 -
K-tron has had some fans custom-made for his d900k by a german company, EBM Papst. you need to send in the fan you have now, and they'll scan it and then custom-make more efficient and faster ones for you - not exactly cheap though. but you can do it for any fan out there.
-
yea i read about his and watched the video but it was like 400 dollars ... but its right close by to julian
i think right?

the fans in the m17 are, quite possibly, specially designed to fit exactly into this chassis. of course, you could measure the diameter and hope that there are high-performance fans with the same diameter out there - then you could theoretically just switch the blade set from one to the other.
Can the M17 use ATI hd4xxx cards?
