This topic is a not so easy one^^
Most say it will be possible to add 4870 cards later ...

But all say ... it will take some time untill you can buy them :p So don't wait xD

yeah this topic has been talked to death.. the best answer is just wait and see because no one really knows at this point what alienware will do with the M17 next

you know it all depends what kind of person you are and if you have the patience to wait.

me personally, if i hadnt bought might a lil over 2 months ago and i knew about it for sure, I would have waited...

I believe the term is ad nauseam. it's getting as bad as the old "what ram should I buy for my m15x" boards from about 10 months ago.

I dont think the issue will be the 4870's fitting in.. for sure they will "fit"

it will be basicly everythin else.. like power, heat, motherboard compatiable.. etc

    Hi all

Alienware will offer 4870 CS in M17 system:

    http://74.125.79.100/translate_c?hl=fr&sl=fr&tl=en&u=http://portables4gamers.com/%3Fp%3D5888&usg=ALkJrhgYN23LsKswQ_tCwTPB_EJiao_3cA

As we already know from various official sources 4870 will fit and will be fully compatible with Whitebook/M17 chassis.

We still don't know if AW will offer cards as some sort of upgrade program, or even as a spare part to buy from them directly. Dell did it with XPS M1730 (8700M SLI to 8800M GTX SLI).

Did Alienware offered something like that before?

    Cheers
    Luke

Edit: AW never conformed this! ... OCZ does ...

hm ... I never thought of buying the 4870 without selling the 3870 ... so ... I have no idea how mutch the two 3870s are worth^^

I am not sure whether I buy a 4870 and sell the 3870, but I am still interessted in what I can get for two 3870s?

    Greetings
    Julian

Edit: I think more than "anyone" will sell their 3870s when the 4870 is released ...

i think a lot of m17/whitebook owners will be upgrading to HD4870s as soon as they come out... which will flood the market with cheap, used HD3870s which will be eagerly bought by m9750 owners looking to upgrade.

So "we" have two ways to get as mutch as possible ... sell them "now" or wait after "everyone solled them" ... the second idea is not that good because the price of a new 3870 will drop as well ... :(

ATI might discontinue the 3870 when the 4870 comes out... at any rate, if you want to get the most money out of your 3870s later on when you sell them, just don't OC them now, as stock cards will sell for more later than cards that have been stressed by higher clock speeds and more heat.

I'll never oc gpus or cpus as long as I have warenty :)

And this is a good idea^^ Do you thi´nk the prices of the 3870 will get higher after ATI stoped producing them? Can't belive an old card getting more expensive

i don't think so... the only people actually wanting the old 3870s will be m9750 owners... can't think of anyone else wanting them... so the market would be small, therefore i don't think prices will go up.

i don't think AW will be offering any sort of trade-in. they'll be happy to take your money for a set of HD4870s, maybe for a reduced price if you already purchased the m17, but definitely not any such trade-in like you said.

actually, they might not have to. the only parts of a heatsink that actually touch the card are the copper plate touching the chip, and the pasty stuff that moves heat from the VRAM modules. if ATI leaves the chip in the same place (which is reasonable, why change anything?) and exchange the 128mb VRAM modules (on the HD3870) for 256mb VRAM modules, they won't have to change the heatsinks. Nvidia actually did the latter when going from the 512mb 9800m-gt to the 1024mb 9800m-gtx, so there's a good chance that the heatsink will stay the same.

the only thing they could do is put in fans that turn faster - they can't physically increase the fan size any more at this point.

Have you noticed this thread where sb used a different thermal paste and the temps gone a good pice cooler?
May be they only change the thermal paste but I think they will have to change something with the fans as well.

no if they did put to much thermal paster it can lower it like 5-6 c and with the antec cooler another 5 c so i believe it actually would. It all depends how bad the thermal paste was on there in the first place :D

there is no way to change the fan speed in the m17

they could do that, yes. at any rate, better fans will probably be necessary - regardless of if they're faster or more efficient (or both ;)).

they would have to find a whole new fan that fit inside the laptop which could be done but might be a problem due to size limitations and voltage.....

does any one know what size fans are in the m17? imma look this theroy up :D see if there are more powerful fans that will fit in the m17. Iwonder if it will void you warrenty :p

but yes julian i understand you( P.S its motor not rotor)

K-tron has had some fans custom-made for his d900k by a german company, EBM Papst. you need to send in the fan you have now, and they'll scan it and then custom-make more efficient and faster ones for you - not exactly cheap though. but you can do it for any fan out there.

the fans in the m17 are, quite possibly, specially designed to fit exactly into this chassis. of course, you could measure the diameter and hope that there are high-performance fans with the same diameter out there - then you could theoretically just switch the blade set from one to the other.
