    I thought 20 and 6 does not depend on rep ... it depends on how many posts you have?

    I ordered the M17 with crossfire.
    3/9/09 I received an email stating;
    "M17 ATI RADEON M88 XT 512MB HD3870 SLAVE REV. 1
    3.5- TO 2.5-INCH INTERNAL DRIVE BRACKET" was backordered.
    Then yesterday 3/10/09 I received email stating;
    "1- M17/M15X ATI RADEON M88 XT 512MB HD3870 MASTER REV. 1 .." was backordered and expected to come in 3/17/09. "Once the
    part(s) have been obtained, your order will be processed."
    My wish is they drop the 3870's in the M17's and switch to the 4870's. With me receiving a free upgrade to the 4870's. I wish!

    I could easily see the 3870's increasing in prices, I have a Sager 9750 with the 7800GTX vid card, but it overheated and now wont play games (screen goes all crappy, although at least I can still use it for basic stuff), I would pay a decent amount of money for one that would work, so if you can't sell them for a good amount right away, keep them nice and safe for later on down the road!

    That might work for coins and comic books but in the computer world the longer you hold out the older the tech gets and the more economically viable it becomes to just buy a whole new system.

    so the older slower technology is worth more ? i would pay way more for a 4870 then a 3870 .....

    i see what your saying laptop video cards are expensive because they are hard to find but even now you will find them cheaper then when they first came out

    Actually what it said was;

    "Dear Superior Giant Brained Master,

    Thank you for contacting Alienware.

    Unfortunately, there has been a delay with your order PO-******. The following items are backordered and we are waiting for them to arrive.

    M17 ATI RADEON M88 XT 512MB HD3870 SLAVE REV. 1
    3.5- TO 2.5-INCH INTERNAL DRIVE BRACKET

    Since we do not yet have an estimated arrival date for the parts, I suggest contacting us next week. By then, we might be able to provide you with an estimated shipping date for your order.

    Once we receive the backordered items, we will proceed to start the assembly of your system. We apologize for the delay and the inconvenience this might cause you.

    Thank you for your understanding. If you have any other questions, just let us know at [email protected]. "

    Word for word, that's what it said. Well..., take out "Superior Giant Brained Master" and that's what it said word for word. :laugh:

    The M17 chassis that AW uses isn't any different from any other W840DI chassis that others use, why should the AW model have the ability to fit in 3.5" HDDs?

    Take whatever AW says with a pinch of salt. especially with oddball part names.

    Since Alienwares are merely Clevo's in disguise add a few thousand dollars to boot..........perhaps a better answer would be found by researching the ODM clevo.

    rk computers previously stated on their website before the OCZ Whitebook was cut, that it would support 4870s not to mention they fit and every thing :cool: and by all accounts they will work and fit also AW has stated they will work and they are planning a upgrade with flextronics

    THE M17 IS NOT A CLEVO!! its a arima/flextronics w840Di

    -_- lol. I would ignore this comment if your looking for searching for a real answer, as moo said it's not a Clevo chassi. It's also competitively priced and doesn't even come close to adding "thousands" of dollars to boot against similar specced Clevo models.

    Why is it a number of people bash Alienware with not one cogent point? And they come on the Alienware thread to do it. I am too busy to be learning how to build computers so I need to have one built. I did a lot of research and didn't find Alienware to be higher in price compared to anyone who could come close to what Alienware is offering. That was a problem. Finding someone who put together a PC with features even close to Alienware. Those that I did find were outrageously priced compared to Alienware. The only complaint I would have about the configuration of the M17 is the video cards are not upgraded yet.

    It's safe to assume they exist. From comments made by ASUS to owners of the W90 it sounds like the reason their Mobile 4870s didn't use GDDR5 was because of supply issues...Samsung just started producing GDDR5 and Qimonda filed for bankruptcy.

    Claiming the need to focus on newer models, AMD is set to stop supporting pre-Radeon HD 2000 series cards starting with the Catalyst 9.4 driver which is due next month. The latest Catalyst release, version 9.2 offers support for cards dating back to 2002 when not even the first Halo game was available for the PC.

    Hopefully we get some driver for our 3870's

    You sure about that?

    I'm getting $4774 with the Blu-Ray burner included and everything else equal.

    At AW's current prices, however, the M17 is slightly more expensive with the DL upgrade. Without the DL upgrade, they're at equal prices. Once you toss in tax, which AW charges, and KNB doesn't unless you're in its homestate, the M17 is a fair bit more expensive, for example, it would be over $300 more for me in NYS. And yes, KNB models have the lighted keyboard, just no Alien head. I'll try to console myself for that loss with the money I saved.

    And get this into your head, I'm not bashing AW, just pointing out that there's a valid reason why some users complain about AW's overly priced units. AW's base prices have dropped substantially, and the M17's pricing when it first came out was shockingly low for an AW.

    you also need to take into account the fact that the m15x and m17x were one of a kind units and you will never and would never see some of the things that AW brought to the notebook field in any other unit.

    Those clevo's are nice too..but, it uses a desktop CPU and also is a bit bulkier than the M17, and won't overclock the CPU.. but it's still a haus.

    You're comparing rather different laptops. As far as I know, the only UK seller of the W840 is AW.

    I think you mean the Q9450 for the Clevo, and the QX9300 for the M17?

    And while the Clevo is more powerful, it's quite a fair bit larger, as E-wrecked as mentioned. It's about 5.2 kg, compared to the M17's 4kg odd.

    I don't know if it's more powerful.. that's still debatable. The video drivers aren't fully matured for the 3870s. And, if you'll notice..my 3dmark score is comparable to johnksss' ;) splitting hairs really, and I'm not serious. I do agree, the GTXs seem more powerful given the current circumstances.

    Remember, the 3870s for gaming at least, are still getting outperformed. But as we both know, ATI drivers, particularly mobile ones, need work. ;) That's the main issue I have with the ATI powered machines right now. The cards are not weak, they just lack official support.

    That said, both you and john put way too much time into running 3dmark06. :D
