Well i was looking to buy a good gaming top, the m17x looks nice but im wondering i game a ton. As no life as this may sound, i game sometimes 14-17 hours straight, would the cooling system hold this thing cool enough to run that long while gaming the whole time?? without overheating or any other issues?

Don't worry, the cooling is more than suited to keep it cool for 14-17 hours straight. ;) Once the temps hit a certain point they won't get any hotter anyway, unless the fan fails or something. o.0

I played Crysis for 22 hours straight and I never went over 65C. I did invest in a Zalman Cooler so that played a big part in the temp too!

IMO, the M17x is one of the most 'DO-IT-ALL' notebooks designed to date..... but seriously, if I am gonna pound on keyboard for '14-17 hours strait', I'll probably spare wear & tear on the M17x, and do it from my desktop gaming rig. I can wreak havoc on a keyboard.....

    You forgot diapers!

I once gamed right through my anniversy, and that was with the kids asking me when my anniversy was. Darn you Asheron's Call, Darn you to heck!

Since then I don't game as much. Though I might call in sick between Nov 10th and the 17th. Heck, I might just be "sick" through Thanksgiving now that I think about it.

I have no doubt about that :) I personally have never gamed even close to that long. Then again, I have only played a handful of PC games so I guess that wouldnt qualify me as "hardcore" I used to really be into a game called Star Trek Elite Force. Now that game along wwith Quake 3 I sometimes would go on 3 to 5 hours runs but thats about it.

You all seem to know what you are talking about but I don't. That is why I am asking for your help. I am wanting to purchase a Alienware 15x. but can't make a choice on 2 items.

    i7 920 or i7 820
    6 or 8GB DDR3 at 1333MHz.

I don't game a lot but I do a lot of photos. I just don't want to pay for over kill. Again, your help would be appreciated.

I used to own both those games but was not very good at them. I was a "light weight" in gaming back then but since 2006 I have had allot of time on my hands (been unemployed off and on for 22 months) so I have become a gaming maven in World of Warcraft. I am over 103,000 Honor Kills (love PvP)and for one three month period I played about 40 hours a week  ! At that rate even an old timer like me has to be fairly good

I am still looking for work, though filling allot of my free time by going back to College, so I only play WoW about an hour a day, looking for a new game.

    As for the original question about gaming for long periods;

The most intensive "game like" program I use is X-Plane 9. Part of my work requires the utilization of an ultra realistic flight sim and to do that I needed something mobile and powerful enough to keep high fps. After flying for three plus hours with multiple take offs and landings, settings almost to max, and constant weather updates the M17X never went above 70C.

I know there are more rigorous games out there, but if you want something mobile and have the cash, there is no other choice when it comes to a gaming laptop.

Or, until Clevo debuts some monstrosity containing both i7 and Sli/Crossfire.

Go for the i7 920 and 4GB of DDR3 at 1333MHz. Honestly, anything above 4GB of RAM is complete and utter overkill, which is fine on desktops with up to 6 RAM slots, but here you have to use 4GB RAM sticks to make 6GB or 8GB, which is extremely expensive.

    Haha just saw this thread.

There's hardcore, and there's just plain no life. I come under the "no life" category.

Try 15 hours of your waking life each day playing Heroes of Newerth and L4D. Just yesterday I did 17 hours straight of L4D versus, didn't even eat anything until I woke up after getting a little sleep. Now I'm alt tabbed out of HoN to post this and gonna go playing for 15 or so hours today.

There was a question on a quiz "How many hours do you game a week?" the highest was 30+. LOL, I do that in 2 days. Not that I'm proud or anything of it, and I admit straight up I have a lot of mental disorders, including exreme agoraphobia and avoidant personality disorder, which prevents me from going outside and seeing "people" because of mass panic attacks, so yeah I've gotta crap my life down the toilet somehow. Enter the "No Life Gamer" :D

Yeah when Diablo II ladder resets took place a few years back, I was the only person to reach 99 that didn't have multiple people leveling their accounts first on Europe realm. No one believed me that I spent 49 hours without sleep at the computer leveling like a psycho. I payed the price after, in fact I ended up hospital which was a nightmare being around people. Lesson learned, don't pull 50 hours straight playing a single game. Now, if you'll excuse me I need to plan for my 80 hour straight marathon gaming session this week....

JK on the last bit, haha.

I expected this thread to be about specs rather than temps.

What I've noticed most about cooling is: it doesn't depend so much on ambient air temp as much as it does on airflow. May seem obvious but if your desk is against a wall/barrier (as most desks are), it's a lot of recycled warm air. Even with the a/c on high, it just can't cool the air semi-trapped in that space. Right now, it's idling at 50C even though I'm not doing much on it, coz it's in a corner and has a barrier behind it (at work). Otherwise, it's around 40C.

If I game at the place where I was staying, with mild a/c and the nice open space behind the laptop, it max-es out at around 70C (playing UT3 which tends to get the CPU hotter than GTA IV does). GPU: same principle, different temps.
