Can the m15x Really Support the 9800M GTX If It Was Custom Upgraded? Alienware Testing m15x With the 9800M GTX?

I just talked to an Alienware rep about a new m15x. She didn't know anything about anything new coming, though she did mention that the current m15x can handle a 9800M GTX. She said that they're testing the 9800M GTX in the current model and it runs fine. She recommended buying it with an 8600M GT and buying the 9800M GTX from a third-party reseller. Representatives are usually clueless, but the MXM slot in the m15x should be able to handle the 9800M GTX, so it would be worth trying if anyone wanted to. Anyone want to try testing if the m15x can really handle the 9800M GTX? If it can, my only real complaint with the m15x would be that the screen is CCFL backlit.

If I didn't already have the 8800M GTX I would. But there are enough people with the m15x here who don't and might be interested in upgrading themselves. If anyone plans on doing this, I recommend talking to multiple people just in case this one person turns out to be wrong.

Yea I don't know I think the 9800GTX might own the M15x in terms of heat but who knows. Honestly I don't know but they better TEST this before they do it :)

Are there actually stores out there that sell just notebook gpu's? Don't think I've ever come across any place that sells graphic cards for notebooks by themselves.

I've searched, can't find it unless i contact manufactures.
How easy (and cheaper) would it be to buy a m15x with an 8600, then buy a 8800M GTX aftermarket, and install it yourself..

if you upgrade the CPU to 2.5 or something. leave the ram, harddrive, and GPU alone and save for upgrade later, i want to say $1800

on the side note, if the 9800GTX isn't suicidal in price, i guess i'll give it a shot. I've been searching all over the place and no luck, but i haven't been looking so hardcore. if i do find it, i'll make a video and stuff. because yes i'm bored.

Unless Alienware officially states the m15x can support the 9800M-GTX and starts offering it, I would not take any stock in what the rep said. See this thread regarding the Sager NP8660 aka Clevo M860TU - it can't support the 9800M-GTX because it's too hot:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=259667
So, I doubt the m15x can.

Hmm, maybe with a bios update, to kick the fans into full when a game is launched - I'm sure that would keep it cool enough, right?

$800 from XoticPC. Just give your m15x a kiss before you melt it.

The basics aren't the only reason to get an m15x. -_- Where's your smart bay and hows your battery life is what I would ask. The m15x has a smart bay with quite the lengthy battery life. Not to mention that the SB can also handle DVD R/W, Blu-ray and an extra HDD...

Also, I see some of you that are interested in upgrading that have the 8800M GTX. Just in case you didn't know, the 8800M GTX = 9800M GT in performance. So, unless you really just want something in the next gen. it's not worth the upgrade. 8600 and 8700 users should feel welcome to the upgrade but Chaz's point is definitely something to consider.

Hell, I'm hoping they figure out a way to safely run the m15x with an 9800M GT. Would that make it the only 15.4" notebook with it then?

Already have a 9800GT :) I think you mean 9800GTX and NO they wouldn't be technically. Clevo has already put the 9800GTX in their notebook but decided not to leave it in because of heat issues. You could have a 9800GTX in the Clevo with a cooling fan underneath it the whole time and it would probably do alright.

I'm definitely very interested in trying this, beside I got some money to spare at the moment and with a cooling pad i don't think my notebook would meltdown, or would it?
