Can you use the ATI/AMD website to update ATI drivers at all?

I have AW M17 notebook and I'm trying to install newer version display drivers and the ATI CCC using THIS LINK because it is from 6/15/2009. My laptop has ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870, so I select the corresponding OS (Vista Home prem. 32 bit), Radeon >> HD 3870 and when I go to that page and download the fullest package there 43 MB, I wonder wth is going on?

I install it and there is no CCC at all, in Device Manager it still shows /!\ like not installed display drivers. All this package does is it installs some random setup files that are the same as the original file that I download and some other files and ATI registration stuff but no sign of CCC or anything. I thought that by being a partner of AW, ATI provides drivers up-to-date for Alienware as well.

Here's how it looks, all 3 files on that page don't install anything that can serve although i select the same...

    ^^^ Correct ^^^
ATI does not release Mobility Drivers for their graphics cards for Windows Vista, you have to mobmod them. ATI Does release Windows 7 drivers for their mobility cards, however. Well at least until Windows 7 officially releases, and then we'll have to see if they continue the trend.

I can verify that mobility modded 9.6 drivers work great in Vista x64 for crossfire 3870's. The install was just buggy for me, crashed first time and had to do again. I have also seen mobility modded drivers take forever, they did eventually go through though.

This is the link to the mobility modder download and instructions:

Just follow the instructions and download whatever driver package you wish to use.

The only thing I would do differently from the instructions is to remove the old drivers, then use Driversweeper to remove any traces of the old drivers. Then you're ready to proceed with mob modding and installing the new drivers. I use the 9.6 drivers and they seem to work quite well.

Be sure to download the correct drivers ie 32bit or 64bit. Same goes for the version of mobility modder you'll need.

I also have to recommend the clean driver removal before trying to install the modded ones. I am 99% certain this is what caused the odd behaviors for me, as it always hung when installing the CCC install manager.
