Has anyone heard any news of this driver release? Will it be supporting dell's 5870's (because dell's current drivers are suck)?
thanks for any info!

haven't heard anything, but I wouldn't bet on the official 10.6 drivers to include dell 5870s. dell will have to release it themselves. worst case, someone finds a way around dells vbios and comes up with a way to flash the 5870s so it can use official ATI drivers.
-
Its on ATI to fix the drivers not dell. At least thats the going story right now, is that ATI didn't include the dell 5870s in their drivers.
-
Yeah Mazda, i think soysauce is correct. ATI drivers from 10.1 to 10.5 all work with dell's 4870's without any customization needed.
10.5 doesn't work with dell's 5870's because ATI didn't include the unique vendor ID's throughout their code, thus the driver installation doesn't find any graphics hardware compatible during the install wizard.
I'm just hoping ATI adds compatibility with 5870's by 10.6, and that 10.6 will be released soon. -
1) Unstable systems as a result of Ati drivers are #1 reason for people calling Alienware technical support. The first question they ask people calling in is whether they have changed their video drivers.
2) Ati drivers do not support certain features and specs of alienware. They never have and never will.
3) Takes a long time to test new drivers because they put them through rigourous certification.
4) The dual 5870's with Alienware drivers can play any game on the planet in high resolution mode
5) The Alienware drivers take into consider the temp/power load which the generic drivers do not.
6) There is a very delicate balance under the hood of your M17x to make power supply work for all components.
Here is a generic example of how a poor driver can brick a card.

I really hope mobile Catalyst 10.6 is released soon since 10.5 have borked OpenGL support.
-
I will test the same version released on 05/17/2010. -
I forget who said it, it was either drake or joker, however, the next catalyst release *will* be compatible with our cards. It was supposed to be a device ID code problem on AMD's part that did not allow the other drivers to work.

-
well that is great news. I hope joker is right.

ati pulls a big fat finger on supporting mobility cards.
every time i complain on ati forums about support from ati they always send me back to dell for drivers.
waiting for the damn map loading times fix for bad company 2. been 3 months now and still no fix.
ati just gives support to desktop cards and mobility users get screwed and send back to laptop manufacturer.
wich is bull cause ati makes the cards but dell intergrates them in there system.
ati needs to be on grip with the drivers or they will get my finger on a upgrade to nvidia.
but then again nvidia was ty too with mobile cards. every 3 months or so a driver update.. but they at least support it. -
The BFBC2 loading problem pisses me off bad. They've almost fixed it 2 or 3 times now only to say "oops we didn't fix it" and then ing over the mobility users by releasing hotfixes for the desktop only. How hard is it to make a mobility installer?
They may not think it's a big deal, but stuff like this is enough for me to avoid ATI parts in the future. It's ing pathetic.
If they decided that they are going to release mobility drivers, they need to ing stand behind that decision. -
10.5 drivers work immaculately with 4870's and dual 4870's.
you've been spoonfed propaganda. perhaps prior to 10.x drivers, there have been problems. But not as of late.
EDIT: and your example caused fans not to cool the gpu properly of ANY nvidia GPU, not just notebook gpus. That nvidia can make such a mistake only proves that dell can make the same mistake in testing their drivers. -
Too many people change a driver and than post 5 minutes later that it works. Unfortunately it would take months maybe even a year for certain premature failures to arrise from power and temp issues.
-
Any one can post a link to download 10.5

When try to install the drivers from ati 10.6, it doesn't actually install any drivers. How come?
-
Because you're probably using the Desktop Versions. Try using the application in this thread to find your drivers.
