Hey guys.Well, I've been wanting an alienware for the past 3 years now, but I just can't seem to afford one. My budget is £1500/$2800 CAD, so is there a way to fit in an alienware laptop into that budget? A decent one, mind you.

Without the 1920x1200 screen? That sucks. If I did get it, could I upgrade the hard drive later or...?

yep, HDD upgrade shouldn't be a problem. if you want the WUXGA screen that bad, go with the stock processor (or the second-lowest one) and get the screen instead.

why even get one when you cant afford one. you just said it yourself, "i have been wanting one for 3 years but cant afford one". if its a desktop just go out and build it yourself or have someone build one for you. for laptop, get one from someone else.

my friend used to steal computers and he told me that alienwares or any laptop with pretty lights where his first target.

You can get the new M17x with 1920x1200 screen and one year Complete Care warranty in Canada for 2500 not inc tax, even with tax it should come in at under your 2800k budget.

Hmm was wondering why he stated Pounds and Canadian dollars... are you sure he doesn't travel between both countries? must be a reason for his /2800$ CAD statement.

Ok that's what I thought which is why I posted what you can get from Dell.ca, not sure if it is interesting to you but you can get a base config with an upgrade to the 1920x1200 screen and one year Complete Care warranty for 2500 CAD before tax and you can also upgrade the laptop with other stuff later on, including warranty extension and probable GPU upgrades.

Depending on the province you will be ordering from tax will be approximately an extra 200-297$ but should remain under 2800 tax included. I'm ordering the same config from Quebec and with Federal and Provincial tax mine comes to 2797.00 CAD, should be cheaper everywhere else in Canada though.

Same here - I've been wanting an Alienware for as long as I can remember. When my M17 arrived last Christmas - I was over the moon. However, after a few months of owning it - I was somewhat let down by a few issues, such as Quad stuttering, sound didn't work (had to send it back over the Xmas break!).

Don't get me wrong - it's a spectacular system when it works, but I can't help but feel that it's bit of a case of the adage "Never meet your idol".

So in all honesty, if you're budget is stretched, you're much better off getting a highly speced Dell (say) than a low end Alienware for the same price - because you're paying for the name to a certain degree.

Alternatively, if you really want Alienware save up your cash (as I did) so you can really make the most of Alienware's advantage (such as top end extreme processors, SLI/Crossfire video cards, etc).

Sorry if it's a roundabout way of answering your question. Though I would imagine there would be a few M17's going cheap on fleaBay about now.

Upgrading the hard drive would be an easy fast upgrade yourself. The 1920x1200 screen is just a higher resolution than the 1440x900. My M17 has the 1440x900 and the screen is still great. It's not worth a lower processor to get.

But yeah, I'd get the M17. It may use dated 3870 cards but it's still damn powerful, I play Crysis on high, 1440x900, near constant 30+fps. And there's still talk of a possible future upgrade to better 4850s/4870s/something better :p

On Alienware.co.uk right now you can get the M17 with WUXGA Screen, Dual HD3870's, T9550 and Intel Wireless Card for £1406. Base price has really gone down in the last week from £1099 to £954 and the upgrades went down in price too!
