I use HWMonitor, google it. Easy, lightweight, and it'll show all the temperatures that there are sensors for on your computer.

    Hi,
Alienware approves of HWMonitor, so any reads you get from it will be valid with a representative.

You can also use HWinfo32 or Everest Ultimate. The later isn't free though.

I've used Piriform Speccy which has CPU temperature and HDD temperature.

Has average temp and temp of each CPU core.

About says you can find it at speccy.com

I have an asus G73 which has an HD5870. HWiNFO32 will detect the temp sensors on your card, you may need to close the program and launch it again to see the temps though so i'm not sure the readings are accurate. AMD tray tools also has a version compatible with the 5870. I tired installing ATI tray tools, but it crashed every time i attempted to run it, some people fixed that by deactivation overclocking when they installed if i recall correctly.

I simply use SIW (system information for windows). Reads everything I need to know (hdd, cpu, gpu).

Odd, maybe the 5870s use a different kind of temperature sensor. Or, rather worryingly, maybe they don't have a sensor at all.

Nice! I like it. The only problem that it doesn't read my 4870's temps.

HWinfo32 should be able detect it (the latest version).
    5870 has 3 sensors (Core/MEM/Shader), don't worry ;)

Hm thats weird, normally when you click on sensors it should show all the temps. Also, when you click on 'video' it should give all the info about your gpu including the temp (but I noticed that this temp does not change as fast/regularly compared to the sensor fucntion).

The card does have sensors, though for reasons unknown to me, some programs have problems detecting it, so far HWiNFO32, ATI tray tools and AMD clock tools detect the sensors. The info is buried in the G73 owner's lounge though, so it' not easy to find.

HWiNFO32 detects 4 sensors, one for the diode too. The other programs detect core, shader and memory.

current gpu-z is working for the 5870 now also.

You're right, 4 readings. But I think one of them is logical (calculated), same way some programs detect 3 sensors for dual-core CPU's when one of the readings is showing the average value between the cores. I might be wrong though.

I'm no tech expert, so i wouldn't know for sure, but sounds logical to me. Anyways here's what the idle temps for the card look like in HWiNFO32 10 minutes after my G73 was turned on, the diode temp is definitely not an average hough.

I believe the "Thermal Diode" temp is the highest of the other three and in effect provides a single reading worst case report.
