    I own a toshiba laptop and well it gets pretty dirty sometimes (I don't really eat much near my laptop that often...) but here's how I clean it;
    I take a couple of tissues and soak them with water and soap , I take another couple of tissues and soak them in water only (Not really soak..) Anyways. I clean the screen, keyboard and touchpad with the soap/water tissue - then I clean it with the tissue that has water - then I wipe it with a dry tissue.

    I haven't gotten any problems doing this. I might have done this over 50 times. Even when it's on.

    Of course, I wouldn't risk it with my Alienware.. I'll try not to eat near it, or touch it with dirty hands.. but if it does get dirty (from the outside) - how should I clean it?

    Thanks!

    Isopropyl Alcohol! NOTHING ELSE! (I could have ended my post right here).

    Not much to discuss.... Use Alcohol wipes or straight up liquid isopropyl alcohol (70-99%). They're the best way to clean your screen, keyboard (use air can) and outside of your laptop. Use a microfibre cloth NOT TISSUES (tissues leave pieces behind). for the keyboard you can use a q-tip. You also use this to clean Thermal Paste when reapplying it to your cpu/gpu.

    Keep in mind. The higher % of isopropyl the better because its a. less conductive and b. leaves no trace. And finally c. The isopropyl alcohol dries by itself!!!

    Been using it for YEARS.

    Whatever you do don't use windex...ever...

    Update: You can buy a litre of Isopropyl alcohol 99% for 8 bucks at your local pharmacy (walmart even). Its usually behind the counter. Just ask :)

    turn off your system if your using any liquids. don't use tissues or napkins. invest in a good microfiber cloth like others said. for the screen use screen cleaner, or just some warm water. for keyboards and vents get a can of compressed air and blast away.

    I used the cloth that came with my glasses. I'm pretty sure it's microfiber cause glasses are also delicate and require minimal scratching. I'm also using my lens cleaner to wipe down the screen and case. No residue, no scratching. :D
