    Hi,

Sorry to bother you guys again, maybe i did not search properly but i found several different topics saying different things.

Can someone help me with the next qeustion:

I receive my new invoice from dell for my new alienware system, it was mentioned they will put a dual 1GB ati 4870 in it.

When looking at notebookcheck there are 2 GPUS mentioned the mobility radeon hd 4870 x2 and the single one mobility radeon hd 4870.

I guess the dual 1gb 4870 would be the 4870 x2, is this right?

Next to this the reviews all saying the 4870 is having gddr5 memory on the gpu, i am reading diffirent topics on here some mentioning that isn't right and the 4870 are having gddr3 memory. On wiki. i noticed they also mention gddr5. At my invoice somehow it is mentioned to be gddr3, what is right in this case?

Are new dual 1gb ati 4870 equiped with gddr5 or gddr3 these days?

    Regards,
    Dennis

Congrats by the way on the upgrade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a sweet deal. I think what you are reading is that the PC itself used ddr3 while the cards utilize ddr5. For example my 1st Gen M17x used ddr2 but the GPus utilize DDR3. But I might be wrong.

No, I believe the OP is confusing the desktop version of the 4870, which has gddr5 memory. The mobile version is gddr3.

Technically, the 4870 X2 is two "4870 cards in one card" (either two PCBs "sandwiched" together or chips for two cards on a single PCB), while two 4870 Crossfire are two physically separate cards connected with a crossfire cable. Some people also call the latter "4870 X2", even though it's not correct. The Mobility Radeon HD 4870s in the Alienware M17x are two separate cards connected via Crossfire cable.

The Mobility 4870 cards that have been released all come with GDDR3 memory. The Desktop cards come with GDDR5 memory. Some prototypes/(review-) samples of the mobility cards had GDDR5 memory, but they never made it to the market allegedly due to problems with the production/yield/price. Even the lately produced Mobility 4870 cards come with GDDR3 memory.

Thanks, indeed i am a little lucky with the exchange of a old machine into a new machine with new warrenty also :)

You guys are really fast :).

So are there any reviews known about the cards i would be receiving now, and what would be the difference betweem the 4870 x2 once and the one i would be receiving, in case it are 2 seperate cards i did not really notice any usefull reviews :O... or am i wrong?

Or are the reviews on notebookcheck and the information on wiki. wrong?

    Thanks in advance,

    dennis
