How about a core i5 on the M17x? Could it be the next refresh for the M17x?

Mobile versions will be.
Not for at least a year though (likely longer) and there's nothing to prove that it will be worth it. -

If it does what they say it will it will be absolutely worth it.

Judging by I7, apart from hyperthreading I see little to get excited about, in the majority of cases all that sets it apart is a small IPC boost; and I mean small...5-10%, which is nothing compared to northwood/prescott--->conroe. The overclocking side is nice; but again we're a bit more limited in how useful that'll be to us with laptops!
-
Not if it's clocked as low as they said they were...
-
The new architecture, like Phin said, will not be available for a while for the mobile platform. Even when it is, the performance vs. what we have available today is very questionable. Tons of debates, but the census is, is that the 1st (maybe even 2nd) generation of the i3/i5/i7's will not be a worthy upgrade. [LOWER clock rates, less OC'ing abilities, more power consumption]
A worthy upgrade would be the 32nm architecture. Research/Wait for that. -
They're not that impressive. The die-shrink is really the most worthwhile part and the quads wont get shrunk until sometime after the middle of next year.

I'm just trying to figure out there next move but if it's that long away it's not worthy of our time.

Like we talked about before.. on dutch site
Core i7 vs QX9300.

even if they release some mobile i5 or i7 for the m17x that is going to be only new builds not upgrades because they will have to replace the motherboard! with the new chipset-northbridge right?
-
Yeah and its going to be quite some time if it even ended up in the M17x at all which i almost doubt and they would move to another model . Based on the current info of the CPUs coming i doubt they would be in any hurry to jump on those CPUs at all .
-
yep your right..
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!

Nah it wont be soon thats why i think they will avoid the first gen versions of these CPUs for the ALL powerful . Where theyll end up is some of there other machines possibly the Studio lines or Precision lines possibly(pure speculation of course).
-
Most, if not all, Intel based notebooks will eventually move to, or be replaced with new models using, Core i processors just like they moved from Santa Rosa to Monty. That's just standard operating procedure.
-
Well obviously lol, im talking in the near future . That of course if the comment is directed at me
.

Is that you in the picture? so I'd know to be reaaaaallly nice to you?
Or is it not..so I'd just pretend to be nice to you? -
It's a friend, scytus.

Yeah unless theres a ring on that finger that does not mean much . Boyfriends come and go so i would not let that stop you at all. You should be on the phone with the airline as we speak .

Oh baby you..... You got what I neeeed..... But you say he's just a friend.... But you say he's just a friend.....

Me too!
LOL -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
that's fine I think about that too but can't do nothing
-
-
EDIT: ...wow sorry, that kinda sounded cocky -
It's just not something like top end GPUs in SLI which you only ever see in a handful of specialized notebooks. -

the ONLY reason the desktop versions of nehalem were decent is compared to core 2 quad is because of comparable clocks
with the mobile parts, the TOP model (extreme edition) will be 2.0 GHz......these will MAYBE match the QX9300 when OC'd. And then you still have a MUCH hotter chip and MUCH higher power draw.....so they are nothing to get excited about.....yet -

staying on the topic, where can I find a good white paper about the i5?

Pretty sure theres some tech sheets floating on Intel.com. Ars Technica might have something also. I5 is basically just a refined, mainstream version of I7 on a different socket...nothing to get excited over by and large.

Yes it will overclock a lot better for starters. As it will detect how many cores it needs won't it be less hot whith one or 2 cores working most of the time while the quadcore will always use 4?
Here's something i found for desktop pc's, might be comparable overclock difference % only lower offcourse:

More like the mainstream version, per se. I7 was really intended for business, server or enthusiast applications, I7 will be the everyman version.

I looked into overclocking of the existing i7 desktop CPUs a little bit the other day and read that disabling Turbo Boost when overclocking isn't uncommon since raising the base clocks on the CPU won't raise Turbo Boost's overclock. So it looks like if say your base CPU clock was 2Ghz, and TB can speed up 1 core to 3Ghz, then if it's possible to overclock your base clocks to 3Ghz TB would never kick in and basically what you'd end up with is a 3Ghz quadcore....which is what we've already got with the QX9300.
As for the heat the first Core i mobile quads being introduced are still 45-nm and the fastest has a TDP of 55w so it's a good bet they'll be running as hot or hotter than the current mobile quads. When TB kicks on it shut downs 2 or 3 cores but it redirects the power those cores were using into the 1 or 2 cores it will be overclocking. Granted the CPU is not going to use as much juice to power 1 or 2 cores as it does to power all 4 but that power draw is still going to make the CPU hotter than your standard dual or single core CPU.
Real power savings and cooler CPUs won't come until the quads are shrunk to 32-nm. -
ohhh so true Phin i just laugh @ the people going ZOMG new i5 chip gotta get me some then post on here OMG i only have 1 core why ?
