Thinking about the m17 or the m15x, leaning more towards the m17 but i have a couple of questions.
If i buy 2gb of ram with the laptop and a 320gb hard disk, how easy would it be for me to install 4gb of ocz ram and a 500gb hdd to the laptop as it would appear to by much cheaper to do this.
Cheers
-
For hard drive, it would take LONG full 13.45 seconds to install the hd.
For the ram, if you find the right ram, it would take longer, there are more screws. So it would take 24.67 seconds.
All should be done within 1 minute.
But that's if you are pro. If you are newbie, you would probably double your time to 2 minutes total. -
what a fun response. -
lol cool, just wondered how easy it would be since ive never upgraded a laptop before. Are they sensitive to RAM brand then? as ive seen 4gb of ocz for like £100.
-
Buy a brand you know and trust.
go to the Alienware Knowledge base and type in the model of the system you're actually buying and the part you're replacing for a full how-to guide. -
There are ram that are incompatible, it's best to bring your laptop to local shop to buy ram, tell them that you dont know if it works or not, then you put it in in front of them. If not work, refund right there.
And then report to this forum which ram doesn't work. -
You'll need DDR3 SODIMM which is 204pin, all voltages will be the same afaik in laptop memory, so that wont a be a issue.
HDD will need to be a 2.5" SATA model. -
Seems that ScottY is assuming that he's getting the m17...
-
Ah didnt see M15x :x
If it's a M15x of course it'll have to be DDR2 RAM and 200pin.
Considerable less cost because it's now older technology. -
-
Nope, at least for ddr1 and ddr2, there are rams that doesn't work for with certain notebooks. That's why there are different models from the same brand and same speed. -

How does that system look? i intend to add the 500gb hdd and 4gb of RAM aswell. What do you think the performance would be for call of duty 4, far cry 2 ect?
I was very torn on the processor, i was going to go for the quad extreme but the setup above has a very nice price.

Hey, Sky_hitech, what does that M1730 in your Sig score in 3DMark'06? I am an M17 owner, and I'm seeing a lot of controversy boiling over the M17 VS. the M1730. Many are saying that the M17 is superior, but I can only muster 11.3K 3DMarks. I'm seeing M1730 benchmarks hitting nearly 15K. That is too significant of a margin to compare the two machines. I realize that I didn't get the top-notch CPU, and that the ATI drivers for the 3870's are ****. Still though, a 3-4K margin? Can someone shed some light on this?
-
yeah, the cpu difference is worth 3 to 4k in 3dmarks06.

Back when I had my Dell E1705, I replaced the T7200 (2GHz) with the T7600 (2.33GHz) and saw a minuscule gain in 3DM'06. Someone in this forum bought the M17 with the Quad core CPU, if I'm not mistaken. Can someone provide a high end benchmark?
-
check the OCZ section, i'm sure at least someone got the quadcore CPU...

I bought the quad core. As soon as the machine is built and arrives, and I figure out how to run benchmark programs and which to use, I'll provide some data for everyone.

I don't think the 7950GTX was crap. Looks like you owned one too brother.
-
7950gtx is crap now, and a 3.4g quad core won't bring up the score of that GPU in 3dmarks.
Our CF GPUs need better CPU to use it to potential, which I plan to upgrade later. -

You're the one who came out of nowhere and started talking about the 7950. I never said it was still a good card dude.
-
sorry, I thought your post#22 and#26 are the first and second post in this thread to have anything regarding 7950.
btw, how did you get 7950 into your 1705? ebay purchase or trade?
