yea. any ideas on how to fix/ if i can even fix this?
i was just using for general..ish use (restoring ipod touch) and facebook, and the laptop shutdown.
on startup I opened up HWmonitor and my cpu temps were 90+.....
    what can I do?
(besides laying a deskfan sideways facing into the back of the computer :p)
the 9400M gets really hot too...

    Well, couple of things -

    1. If you havent, get a can of compressed air and give the fans a shot. Look at the bottom of they laptop - is there a layer of dust visible around the fan intakes? If so, wipe it off.

    2. If you are technically up for it, you can also open up the system and properly clean the fans and re-apply aftermarket thermal compound. This I do not suggest doing if you are unfamiliar with this type of maintenance.

    3. Elevate the back of the laptop - make sure you have free airflow.

    4. Disable the 9400M G in the BIOS - see if that helps. Be sure to DISABLE both Hybrid Graphics and Integrated Graphics.

If you are tech savvy and feel comfortable with opening up the system, in addition to Moo's video - also download the Service Manual .pdf and use it as a reference. It will walk you through each step. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/M17x/

If using an aftermarket thermal compound, I suggest Arctic Cooling's MX-3. Keep in mind, there are many choices in the thermal compound arena - do your research and select the one you want. Up to you.

Thanks man, I don't think I am technically savvy enough, but I know people (in RL :p) that could help.
Ill give it ago, and have bookmarked Moo's vid.(hats off to him for that)
Edit: Im trying disabling the BIOS. soo far, somewhat better. not crashing. they sit at about 77-81 doing the same things (facebook, itunes, msn) though..
what should the idle temps be ? (or at least with a light to moderate load)

EDIT EDIT: no dice. it crashed/shutdown.
    I'm calling Dell tommorow..... /sigh.
