Very, very nice. However, I can't overwrite the imageres.dll file (and yes I've gone into properties, changed ownership to admin and gave the entire system permission to change the file) and from the guides it appears that you need another OS in order to change it.

What you need to do is after you take owner ship, give your account full persmission, not system account or admin account.

After you have done that,,, make a backup copy of the original by renaming it to something else, then copy the modded imageres.dll to c:\windows\system32\ folder in safe mode.

    Good luck.

If all else fails download this registry hack for taking ownership of files from this link http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...ership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

If you are too lazy to read then here is the direct download http://www.howtogeek.com/downloads/TakeOwnership.zip

After you install it your right click will now have "Take OwnerShip" if you right click on a file or group of selected files.

how long does the start-up and shut-down each sound last? i personally prefer to use the godzilla roar or theme song, so I might try splice something up.

8 seconds for the start up.... and there's 6 or 2 seconds for the shutdown... just in case 6 seconds is too long for vista.... and you will get a notification to end the sound application before it could shutdown...

Vista's telling me that I have full permissions already for it so that's not the problem. I know this for a fact because the reason it won't let me copy it is it gets some error (something like 000000x0 I think, with some of the 0s as letters too) whenever I try it.

So has anyone been successful with changing the startup/shutdown sounds?

Could someone post a step by step tutorial?

    Thanks

Lol you go into the config menu choose sound, choose windows sound and then it shows a list of sounds including startup sleepmode and shutoff. Just select one and then browse to your sound file.

If its too hard to change each sound seperatly you can always download soundpackager for free from stardock.com and go to wincustomize.com and download themes/packages.

That's pretty good, but you should make some start up and shut down sounds using the Alienware "On hold" music. (the music you listen to while on hold when you call Alienware tech support.)

Is there anywhere that I can listen to that music without actually calling them?

Vista does not allow you to change the startup/shutdown sounds through control panel>sounds

EDIT: Wait...would it be the logon and logoff sounds?

No, you have to call them, I called them and recorded at least 15 minutes worth, but none of it is really that good of a recording seeing that I used the mic from my headset, haha.

What are you guys talking about. I just did it like i explained like i always do it like that:

config»»hardware and sounds»»change systemsounds»» there's a button to set to windows standard or windows custom sounds, choose the last»» then theirs a list called programevents with the shutdown and startup events and it is possible to change these sounds for me. i have windows vista 64 bit with uac disabled. i am also admin.

Honestly, I don't really like the idea of Transformers startup and shutdown sounds on my Allpowerful Alienware M17x.

As I watched those youtube vids, I can't help but to think how tacky and child-ish it'd make my beast-of-a-monster M17x.

If anything, I don't want others to know that my stealthy laptop is a child's toy.

    Sorry, just my 2cents.
