I currently have a problem with my M17x. Dell has the new one in production. (Keep in mind this is going to be my 4th! new M17x since september. -_-. I've had this one for 46 days.) (keep in mind this was a replacement for a broken refurbished m17300) =D.

    I currently have a:
    17.0in, WUXGA,LCD,ANW,M17X
    Intel Core2 Duo T9600 2.8GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz 2 x 2048MB
    and a Single GTX 260m

The specs for the new one are:
    Intel Core i7 620M 2.66 GHz (3.33GHz Turbo Mode, 4MB Cache)
    17-inch WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 RGB LED (1200p)
1GB ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4870
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz

Did DELL Downgrade these item changes??

Try asking for Single 5870! :D Since Dell site doesn't offer them in single, maybe you can convince them!

I'd rather get duel 4870's if they won't give you 5870's (since theyre not out yet), as if something happens down the line you'll have the option of getting dual GPU replacements.

But he had a single 260M GTX so I doubt they are going to replace it with dual 4870s. He has higher chance with Single 5870 IMO.

guess what. i am also getting a replacement from UK Dell for my broken M17X R1. but the configuration of the R1 is not there anymore.

so my question is. did you ask for those R2 specs or they did it automatically as R1 cannot be configured any more?

Oh oops, I didn't even see that he got a single card. My bad. In that case, 5870 all the way :D

thus did they ask you if you accept those changes before they go on?

and he is offered a single gpu because he had a single gpu i guess.

Wait are you saying that the GTX260M is not comparable to the 4870 single 1gb?
they don't even sell them with a single 4870 only dual and a single 5870...

[[If I am gonna call alienware to say something can someone offer me some hard evidence that the 4870 is a downgrade.]]

What i would suggest as others have commented is try and get 4870's in dual xfire if there jive turkeying u about that set-up,try again 4 the single 5870.But end of the day its a win win for you even with a single 4870 ;).
Oh by the way i had a R1 with a T9800 proc was superb but the i7 620M on the R2 is a noticeable upgrade with the RGB .

Guys over at Alienware are smart =) Just tried and He knows that the 4870 benchmarks over the single GTX 260m and that a 5870 upgrade will probably not happen. But! I ran into one tiny problem. I may be wrong about it but according to Dell's purchase screen and Intel's information on the FSB speed and type of memory the processor will take

"More memory increases overall performance and enables your computer to run more applications at the same time. 1333mhz memory options require the selection of an Intel Core i7-720QM processor or higher in the processor selector tool."

They are sending me a Intel Core i7-620M processor with 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz. Dell does not let you purchase 1333mhz RAM with this chosen processor and the Intel website said it only takes DDR3-800/1066. Will this cause a problem with the new computers. The man at alienware assured me that the ram will function normally if not better than the 1066mhz. Is he correct or are my suspicions probable? Did the Exchange team make a mistake? Will they have to Upgrade me to a better processor? lol

Well, when you get your replacement approved by the tech support people, you can ask for the sales person to call you about possible upgrades. They will call you in a day or two, tell you the configuration they approved and then you can talk about upgrades with them. You might have to pay extra for them, or if you haggle well (and the person you're talking to is open to it), there even is a chance that you get the upgrades free of charge.

easy to say for US customers. for me even for the replacement (whatever it is) Dell Greece has to contact with Dell UK where i bought it from. thus UK Dell will send it here not Dell Greece.

shortly if i ask for more upgrades and stuff i will have to contact customer care in Greece and they will contact customer care in UK, time spending..

anyway do you believe i will get an R2? i cant see an R1 configuration anywhere now on especially Dell UK.

i will make my effort on monday again. they dont work in weekends..

Is your product in production? You can receive the actual specs if you just call them. besides that. I received the Current R1 on March 9th. yes 47 days ago. The replacement was ordered and put in production on the 21st with an R2. I believe that you may be getting yourself a R2 model very soon.

i am still waiting even for the order number. one guy in Dell Greece has the whole case in his hands, contacting Dell UK. Noone else has also more info as he contacts Dell UK via his personal Dell email as someone else told me. He was out of work on Friday so i talked with someone else who couldnt help me more and he didnt have any order number as well.

from what you are saying, i guess you didnt ask for R2 it was done by themselves right?

Don't think anyone answered your RAM question, but no the RAM will not give you any problems with the CPU. ;)
