    Hi all

apologies if this has been asked and answered a zillion times already, but can you tell me if and when dx11 cards will be available in the m15x, and any ideas as to which cards?

Assuming that it's iminent-ish would you hang on or go for the gtx260 now?

From looking at the current availiable specs, an i7 with a 240 or 260 is a bit unbalanced, would you agree?

    thanks

    Ric

It's currently a no go. And Dell is not likely to upgrade to a M15x R2 or something with HD 5870M.

Even if you can put a after market 5870M to M15x, it's gonna cost helluva money.

So you will want to go for a M17x R2 w/ 5870M if GPU/DX11 is your concern.

Why is it not likely? Asus is launching a direct assault at alienware with their cheap and powerfull G series which offer better hardware (in Belgium the m15x offers the gts240m, while the asus g5* series offer the gts360m).

I though the word 'alien' in alienware was a refference to the newest hardware, combined with futuristic designs. It seems Asus would deserve the name Alienware more, and Alienware seems to be running behind on the 15 inch laptop segment. Eventhough their m17x has crosfire/sli options and they recently relaunched the m11x, this still has no impact on me and other people who want a strong 15 inch laptop, with better graphics than the gts240m...

Moo tried a 4870 in a M15x and it wouldn't work properly, well it did but color faults (maybe distortion,)

So the 5870 will most likely not work.

Because until now we still havent heard any news on M15x refreshment.

And as Cata said, ATI is currently a no go on M15x.

By the way 260M on M15x is not bad, at all.

i would consider the 15" market viable for upgrades wouldnt make since for them to release the 15" and not keep it up to date.

Eventhough the 260m isn't bad, wouldn't you expect a direct x11 gpu when you pay +-2000€ for a gaming laptop in 2010? And you certainly wouldn't accept the gts240m which is the only option in my country, or would you? I'm just saying that I expect new hardware from alienware. Isn't that what the AW engineers are praised for all the time, namely their capability of constructing 'portable' gaming machines with the newest state of the art technology?

Well you have to remember your purchasing the computer through dells manufacturing companys now not alienwares they designe the system and thats that if dell decides your area dosent require said part thats on dell not alienware. Try ordering the system threw the phone not the internet site maybe that will open options up for you?

its really to early to say anything right now, nvidia gonna release new cards pretty soon too. so if you wan to wait a few months to get dx11, that is up to you. but imo the 260M is already a pretty sweet card, it handles everything i throw at it so far.

I'm pretty impressed with it mated to a i7 720q once I got the right drivers.... for the games I play the latest drivers were stuttering horribly....

I am sorry to say most of your arguments are pretty flawed :realmad:

1 there is no refresh on the M15x ..... MAYBE a RGB led if they care to but unlikely.....

come on people it just came out 3 months ago

2 if the 4870 did not work why would the 5870 never be able to work

3 the 260 is not one sided ... It may not be the fastest but its pretty dang good

The ATI GPU's series ALL use desktop architecture. So the 4870 was really a desktop 4850 core. The 5870 is a 5770 core with 80 more shaders. Bla Bla Bla. The coding for the ATI cards is always different and its why ATI gpus are less likely to work from series to series. NVidia GPU's have used the same G92 coding for 2 years now

The are no more mobile quad cores slated for release in 2010 ... so clearly its not going to have a refresh anytime soon ...

So please people less opinions and more facts.

Alienware M15x will have a 5870m, the fact that Dell is the 5 series OEM should of told you that. Also Dell is not likely to not get the 5870 when Clevo is ... :chatterbox:

Of course a dell salesman wants money! Commision, truly its only been out for like 3 months or so. These are the newest core i7 quadcores, yes the gtx 260 is a really good card and there isn't much of a difference between this and the gtx 280. Probably be updated with the 360gtx gdrr5 i believe or 3, dx11 will be a long a long time before that occurs. A RGB LED would be nice of course if you already have one a aftermarket upgrade will be crazy expensive!
