Hey guys, I have a friend who has an alienware laptop at my school, and he came to me saying that he couldent get his cpu out to switch it to a quad core. I took a look and it seems to be stuck. Found out when he put the cpu inside it ( yes he already switched to a higher speed dual core already ) he admitted he put pressure and pushed down fairly hard on the heatsink. I told him thats not good, and he may have damaged the pins. What is the extent of the damage do you think he did to the laptop/cpu? It wont come out of the socket, but it seems to be running ok. He said he had 1 lockup in crysis but doesnt know if it was a driver issue, he said it was a stutter lockup. Thanks for the help guys.

You do know that the screw on the processor socket locks it in place right?

I'm getting ready to laugh my face off if that is true.

Sweet christ almighty, yes we both know about the screw lock. It is stuck when it is unlocked.

I'm not going to reproduce this in any way. So I hope someone has any experience with this for you guys!
Best of luck! -

TheDutchy is correct. The CPU should be able to lift out easily. I got old CPU sockets and old CPU's that can easily fall out under it's own weight if the socket is turned upside down.

sounds like he may have damaged the socket... try to gently pry out the cpu start with a finger nail.. then go to a small eye glass screwdriver or something but be very easy. if you break the chip well... but if you break the socket then your really in trouble. imo if you cant get it out i would call dell and tell them about it being stuck but do not mention anything about you or him doing anything previous..

Its not the original processor that's stuck though z.

Couldn't you just let the proc be? Afterall it's working now? So why bother to take it out? Unless it has come out for a particular reason off course.
My guess is, if you take it out now, either the proc will be broken (some pins) or even worse your socket, like Zfactor said. -
You can get the processor out with a larger DIN (Like a PLCC) chip remover.
It is like a large pair of tweezer's with a hook on each side. Simply slide them under each side of the processor and you can easily get it out.
You can alternatively use a small flathead screwdriver and gently try to pry it loose.
Be careful, cause cpu sockets are quite fragile.
Unless you broke a pin, you shouldnt have any problem. In fact like half of the pins on the bottom of the socket are simply for grounding purposes.
