Hey guys
Im looking at buying a M17x to use instead of my current system as i go to alot of lans with mates and well having a single cab truck dosent help either![]()
What i wanted to know was how much of a downgrade will i be making from my current desktop specs?
Q6600
Gigabyte P35 DS3P
4gig DDR2-800 ram
9800GTX+
24" Screen
( And yes i know laptops are nothing like a desktop )
I just wanted to know would i see a major difference with extracting zip files, Opening music, copying files?
Also i was told the 280ms are like a 9800GTX so i guess i wouldent see much difference in gaming?
as for the M17x i was looking at this kind of setup:
T9600
4gig 13333
2x 500GB Raid 0
2x GTX280m SLi
17.0 " (1920x1200)
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
If anyone could give me a little insight on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Basically put, the GTX 260M and the 280M are die-shrunk, underclocked desktop 8800GTXs. So, if you had one, it would perform a little worse than your 9800GTX+. In SLI however, and in games that support it, the 280Ms and even the 260Ms will perform faster than your single 9800GTX+.
Just as a tip unless you have money to burn, go for the 260M SLI. The difference between the 260Ms and the 280Ms is actually about 10%-15%.
If you have a Q6600 in your desktop and like it then I'd recommend the Q9000 processor. Overclocking is unlocked in the M17x so you should be able to overclock up to 2.4GHz, and possibly higher if you get a good one.
Essentially, if you do go for the Q9000 and clock it at 2.4GHz or above then (presuming your Q6600 wasn't overclocked) the whole system's essentially an upgrade except for the screen, which you can link to the laptop anyway.
Also, (sorry for all the text) if you can, only go for 1066MHz RAM and not 1333MHz. Due to the fact that all the processors you can get on the M17x have a 1066MHz FSB, the 1333MHz RAM will actually be downclocked to 1066MHz anyway, and so won't perform any better at all. -

Even with the specs you proposed, for everyday tasks you describe, that machine would have no probs knocking them out with ease....

So basically ill have the same performance i have now
If i OC the CPU/GFX cards do you see a difference at all? Also wouldn't the laptop overheat alot after OCing seems everything jammed into such a small space -
no the m17x should not have any over heat prob as long as you don't push it really to hard
but as told the main dif between you desk and laptop is the downgrade from quad to dual core -
K thanks everyone that replyed i do appreciate it
Gonna go order one now
Desktop -> M17x
