Do ATI 4870s run too hot?

Was wondering if you guys noticed that the ATI GPUs run hotter than the Nvidia ones, at least according to Everest and GPU-Z?

Since there's no program allowing you to keep track of the max temps, one way is to minimize games and look at the current temps. So I noticed that even with not too demanding games I often see above 70c and with Crysis it is even above 80! And I mean the constant temp with the fans at their full blast.
I don't have a cooler pad and my room temp is 27c but still, looks too hot.
So I guess the question is : is it me (hardware/software issue) or is it normal for most people with ATI cards?

I havn't recieved my M17x yet with the ati cards, but I do have the desktop 4870x2 and it is a hot card. I put the fan up to 60% while playing games and it is always in the 80's.

what are your personal feelengs of it (keyboard temp or palmrest u know) compared to 280s? are they feeling hotter? i mean - without checking sensors readings

Yes, the desktop 4870 is rather hot, but it is a little scary to let the mobile GPU stay at 80-84c for many hours.

The feelings are the same, the keyboard even stays less hot than with 280s as far as I remember.

so i think sensors are lying. it's not the first time when ati's readings are not accurate

Another point supporting your thought is that the fans kick in at different temps than with 280s, with a 10c shift on every level.
    You are probably right...
Hopefully more people can confirm this.

Actually mind you, if it doesn't need to then it wont, can vsync effect how much power the machine actually needs to use (As in if it can scale nicely on two gpus, then it may not need to fully clock up.)

100% right. Here is a screenshot (Everest Ultimate). It's the Memory that runs that hot, and in games it can be 7-10c above the Shader and the Display/Core temps. That absolutely makes sense now. Nvidia GPUs just don't show the memory temps which should be much higher.

    Thanks for the info!
    +1

that first post with temps are garbage. i didn't refresh gpu-z

    here is an accurate reading.
    http://i50.tinypic.com/2eptyti.jpg
having both the 280m and the 4870 i would say the ati's run cooler. running this game i got the 280m's up to 75 degrees and it is pretty warm where i am. i am not elevated nor using a cooler.

also ati's downclock and cool down quicker then nvidia's...

Yes, here is a similar screenshot (Kings Bounty TAP). As you can see the Memory temp is 4-6C higher than the core/shader and in more demanding games like Crysis the difference is gonna be 10C or more.

Since I had the Ati cards installed my fans have been on all the time, the cpu was running at 75 to 85%, tech support loaded different drivers now the cpu seems ok but the fans are still on 99% of the time so I would say yes they run hotter.

You probably need to re-flash the BIOS and maybe re-install the system/drivers.

Normally you don't need to, but if the fans/temps issues continue with the correct drivers it is possible that the re-flashing will help it. If not, consider a clean re-install and be careful with Nvidia chipset drivers.

I did the BIOS update so I will monitor the fans. I checked device manager and one of the video cards isn't working, it has a code 10 on it? Any ideas why, this happened before the BIOS update.

Wow, while your GPUs run a little cooler than mine, my MCP seldom goes above 55C even under load. I'd put some MX-3 instead of the stock thermal pad there.

In my case it was 15C difference for the max CPU temps and 25c for the MCP. The idle temps are about 10c lower.

Yes, that is your chipset (Northbridge/Southbridge/9400etc), it can easily get to 80c+ with a stock thermal pad.
The problem with AS5 is that it can bleed (you need to apply a very thin layer for the best effect) and the gap between the chip's crystal and the heatsink is about 1mm. So ideally you need something thicker and non-bleeding. MX-3 works fine, IC-7 should be even better. You can even use a cooper plate.

Here is a screenshot 20min into Crysis. As you see the max was 72C but the max memory temp is 82C - 10c difference. So when you see 80c core temp and think that it's fine keep in mind the memory is running 10c higher and it can die sooner.
    Food for thought.

Also have a look at my MCP temp - under 60c regardless of the load and my room temp is 26-27c. With the stock pad it would be 85c.

That's perfect! As I said IC-7 should be better than MX-3. I wonder what is your room temp and do you have a cooler pad? Can you throw us a screenshot from Everest Ultimate? You can install a trial version - it's free. Dunno if any other program can monitor the MCP temps with 9400 disabled in BIOS.

Nice! With 6c difference in room temps your max would be 46 and the MCP sensor is always 5-6 higher than the 9400' so your max MCP would hit 51C when idle so it's not too far from mine but still better. I'll try the IC-7 paste if decide to keep the R1.
