Was wondering if you guys noticed that the ATI GPUs run hotter than the Nvidia ones, at least according to Everest and GPU-Z?
Since there's no program allowing you to keep track of the max temps, one way is to minimize games and look at the current temps. So I noticed that even with not too demanding games I often see above 70c and with Crysis it is even above 80! And I mean the constant temp with the fans at their full blast.
I don't have a cooler pad and my room temp is 27c but still, looks too hot.
So I guess the question is : is it me (hardware/software issue) or is it normal for most people with ATI cards?
-
I havn't recieved my M17x yet with the ati cards, but I do have the desktop 4870x2 and it is a hot card. I put the fan up to 60% while playing games and it is always in the 80's.
-
what are your personal feelengs of it (keyboard temp or palmrest u know) compared to 280s? are they feeling hotter? i mean - without checking sensors readings

Another point supporting your thought is that the fans kick in at different temps than with 280s, with a 10c shift on every level.
You are probably right...
Hopefully more people can confirm this. -
80-84's ares sound temps to be honest, i don't know other m17x temps but i can confirm your in the green for mobile ATI gpus.

an hour of ninja blade. i will play more games later and see what happens.
crossfiire wasn't fully being used according to do so i have other games
-
300/400? You in power play max battery mode?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
idk. why it didn't use crossfire 100 percent. i will test it more by disabling crossfire and see if there is any difference in performance.......
-
Actually mind you, if it doesn't need to then it wont, can vsync effect how much power the machine actually needs to use (As in if it can scale nicely on two gpus, then it may not need to fully clock up.)
-
Aikimox, check this http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5849250&postcount=6119 it's quite useful. i think maybe we see now another reading - maybe ram which could be much hotter than core who knows))
-
100% right. Here is a screenshot (Everest Ultimate). It's the Memory that runs that hot, and in games it can be 7-10c above the Shader and the Display/Core temps. That absolutely makes sense now. Nvidia GPUs just don't show the memory temps which should be much higher.
Thanks for the info!

that first post with temps are garbage. i didn't refresh gpu-z
here is an accurate reading.

having both the 280m and the 4870 i would say the ati's run cooler. running this game i got the 280m's up to 75 degrees and it is pretty warm where i am. i am not elevated nor using a cooler.
also ati's downclock and cool down quicker then nvidia's... -
Ahh thats more like it don! awesome work.
-
Yes, here is a similar screenshot (Kings Bounty TAP). As you can see the Memory temp is 4-6C higher than the core/shader and in more demanding games like Crysis the difference is gonna be 10C or more.

Since I had the Ati cards installed my fans have been on all the time, the cpu was running at 75 to 85%, tech support loaded different drivers now the cpu seems ok but the fans are still on 99% of the time so I would say yes they run hotter.
-

I would say no they don't. Using gpu-z and see those temps. I will look for my 280m temps.

that's normal install the dell drivers then install 9.12 hotfix over it.
-
the 4870's run cool, if your temps are that high you may want to check your paste
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yeah and they cool down much faster then my 280m's.
-
I just got done playing 2 hours of boarderlands with out a hitch, the cards stay very cool.
-
here are my max temps right after 20 min of crysis you cards are HOT

No those are fine.
Try reading the m17x sticky for average tempsLast edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
So there is a way to see the max temps

here you go.

damm those are cooler than mine, what thermal paste are u using on the 4870s?

i noticed a big diff about 10c from my stock grease

I got to get that number with no cooler but it was propped up in the back...
I fo however want to get the mcp down. I used as5. It did lower my mcp temps by 6 degrees. -
sorry for the noobie Qs but what its mcp?

the 9400m look at my everest temp...
-
oh k........

Yes, that is your chipset (Northbridge/Southbridge/9400etc), it can easily get to 80c+ with a stock thermal pad.
The problem with AS5 is that it can bleed (you need to apply a very thin layer for the best effect) and the gap between the chip's crystal and the heatsink is about 1mm. So ideally you need something thicker and non-bleeding. MX-3 works fine, IC-7 should be even better. You can even use a cooper plate.
Here is a screenshot 20min into Crysis. As you see the max was 72C but the max memory temp is 82C - 10c difference. So when you see 80c core temp and think that it's fine keep in mind the memory is running 10c higher and it can die sooner.
Food for thought.
Also have a look at my MCP temp - under 60c regardless of the load and my room temp is 26-27c. With the stock pad it would be 85c.Attached Files:

i applied the ic-7 to the chipset and runs about 40c
-
-
my room temp its about 70farenheit and i dont have cooler pad(naked) and i dont have my laptop with me right now but i took this pics the other day also i had to torn a little the heatsink to reduce the gap, here a pic with cpuz 41c max
Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Nice! With 6c difference in room temps your max would be 46 and the MCP sensor is always 5-6 higher than the 9400' so your max MCP would hit 51C when idle so it's not too far from mine but still better. I'll try the IC-7 paste if decide to keep the R1.
Do ATI 4870s run too hot?
