Just as it says, the box my Alienware came in has been sitting around ever since I got it, and taking up space.
I was thinking that if there was a problem and I had to return it for warranty replacement or something (and I do have a long warranty), I would need the box to send it in. Is this true? How is that managed?

no they will send you a repaid box to send your laptop in, if you need to. having the box is nice for resell value though.

It would increase resale on Ebay or such if you every sell, bu as other poster says you don't need it.

Like Inap said, they will send you a box if you have to return the system for repair. Also like Alienwolf said, it does increase resell value if you have the original box...
My own words, I kept mine and will continue to do so because I am both a geek and a packrat.
The choice is yours, but a few things to consider: they do make nice sturdy storage containers for other things like spare computer parts, they look pretty cool and make good conversation pieces, Put a cinder block inside and a glass piece on top and you have a low-level coffee table. -
I guess its been answered that it's not necessary to keep for Warranty purposes.
But just to add I always keep my boxes just incase I plan to resell it. If I end up knowing I'll keep it for a long time like my Dell 20" LCD, then I'll dispose of the box. Or if the value gets so low that the box will add like $1 then I'll trash it, like an old laptop made in 2004 -
On a side note....
If you ordered m17x, you can keep the boxes in the case you need to move. I actually got even 3 relatively sturdy boxes that I used it for that purpose.
Regarding the warranty, you can log on to support.dell.com with your account it will even show exactly how many days you have left on your warranty (pretty neat). -
Well, thanks for all the replies guys! It pretty much told me all I needed to know.
I'm limited on space to actually store the box and at this time I have no plans to resell it (I'm probably going to keep it so long that the box won't even add the resale value), but I am very grateful for all the information.
Do I need to keep the original box(es) for warranty purposes?
