Forgive me for all the posts but im trapped in the COC today. Anyway I see the only real reason to upgrade to vista or windows 7 64 would be so that I can run 8 gigs of ram vice my systems 4. I dont perform alot of video editing or multi tasking. Would I see a big gain in game play with an increase of 4 gigs of ram, ie 8 gigs?
-
no. stick with 4gb
-
-
the performance increase will gaming would be negligible. stick with 4GB and save the dough.
-
stick with the 4
-
especially with the fact that a 4GB RAM stick have 10x price tag than a 2GB RAM stick.
-
.....hahahha yep NIPR, this is one of the few sites that I can access durring the day here.
-
Nah, stick with the 4GB.
My desktop has 8GB, and it's only useful for running 2 RAM intensive applications/games at the same time. -
If you're stuck on NIPR, depending where you are, you can try out Cracked.com (I have killed many night shifts with that, but some places block it), Tom's hardware, and MaximumPC. Although, max pc wasn't a fan of the M17.
-
with 8 gig you can turn off cache and not have to worry about a system memory low message.
-
This is the kind of question where if there is enough doubt where you have to ask the question, then the answer is no.
-
-
For me it sounds like: Do I need the 64bit verison without upgrading to 8GB of ram
And the answer to that question is (in my opinion):
Yes ... the gains are low but there ... and you "normaly" loose nothing^^
=> Vista/W7 64bit + 4GB of ram and you will be happy

Still my comment is valid for the fact that it's human psychology. We tend to know what's best and worse for us, but just didn't have the courage to go for it until someone told us to. -
Well I had the choice and dove in head first. I got Vista x64 and the 8GB of RAM. I have turned off the paging file and can run many programs at once without the fear of low memory. I run a database, an application server, and an IDE all at once and still have room to do other things without concern for memory. So it's all about what you do with it. For me, I'm cherishing every bit of my memory. Money well spent for me, for what it's worth.
-
It will be cheaper later, and unless you are running virtual pcs there is no need.
-
I agree with Clutch, RAM has significantly dropped since the M17 came out. I priced out buying my computer with 4Gb or upgrading to 4Gb myself after the purchase. In November, it wasn't worth that extra effort for some savings and worrying about potential warranty issues (there should be none). Now, RAM has gotten dirt cheap, and it continues to fall. An 8Gb upgrade will cost nothing shortly.
Well maybe not shortly, but 4Gb is getting dirt cheap. When more people are moving to 8, the price will fall, and upgrade your memory yourself. -
Thanks for all the input ladies and gents.

you know, you can play 3 wows at the same time with 8 gb ram if cpu & gpu
can keep it up. its pointless upgrade just one part of whole system.
you need intel quadro cpu and sli gpu to use all 8gb ram. -
i can play 3 L2 accounts at the same time with 4GB. so 8GB is a bit overkill.
-
If you had 3 hands and 3 monitors go for it. Untel then a old game is not worth it.
-
How do you survive? I mean, I know the operation for the third hand was the worst part of the deal, but man, the games I can play now!! -
sure... because so many games require only one hand to be played...
-
Well, I'm saving up for the six hand expansion pack for me, to allow three games at two hands per game. I hear the gaming companies are already a step ahead of me, though, as games that require three hands to be truly good are already here, with the 4 to 6 hand games in the works.
Just goes to show you - ya can't fight progress! -
what make people mad with me on lotro I only use the mouse no keyboard. And I kick butt.
they say control is everything.
Control is what people need. power is and mind is everything. -
