I've been around for about a year and haven't really known what Alienware does with new releases. Have pre-orders ever been available for laptops or anything before?

    Just curious... Thanks.

Edit: Got my answer! Thank you, everyone.

There is really no point with pre-orders for aw laptops. Simple reason being, aw/dell releases laptops and they are available straight away.

People can bag dell/aw as much as they want, but aw/dell hasn't played wait game with customers and why should they, releasing new model and making customers wait and still selling old systems will only undercut sales. It's just good business sense to release new models when they are ready to be assembled and sold straight away. If dell/aw release new m17xr5/m18xr3 and make us wait and pre order for 2 months, what good will that accomplish? ;)

I was just wondering if they do. I wasn't around last year when they came out. And the pre-orders would have to have started back in March or something, way before the release for it to make any sense.

I assume from your post they don't and probably never will.

    Thanks for answering my question.

They never have, and hopefully they never will. It would create a huge backlog of pre-launch orders and a lot of impatient customers would become obnoxious. If they were to not make the original release date target, then there would be a whole bunch of whining cry-babies demanding something for nothing and it would just turn into a huge fiasco. We already see that kind of behavior occurring when there are order delays or other inconveniences for every reason imaginable. I could see the entitlement mentality spinning out of control and our forums would be totally overrun with childish venting threads. Heaven knows we already see way too much of that already.

What brother fox said and also pre-orders systems works best when it's a product ready to ship, we customise our laptops way too much :D

Hard launches are always the best by far IMO.

Also, how can you pre-order something that is kept tightly under wraps? - let's face it, Dell aren't forthcoming with details of any new hardware - if they were, we wouldn't have lots of speculation about what's gonna be "in" for us with new laptop revisions. There's no way they can keep details under NDA's and allow for pre-orders at the same time. I imagine that this alone would kibosh any possibility of anyone placing a pre-order.

    Nice thought though....

I was just wondering if they ever have in the past.

It's possible to pre-order them. You simply have the configuration setup as it is now, promise a delivery date before anyone else can possibly get one unless pre-ordered, then build the system and ship it. Seems simple enough to me...

Anyway, I got my answer, thanks for all the feedback.

As above that would give away all the options and potentially break NDA.

It would obviously have to be changed. But yeah, too much trouble, not a good idea I suppose. Perhaps for accessories and stuff they could do pre-orders.

Primarily though accessories are value adds, designed to improve the profit margins on each machine sold ;)

But for now we can only go on what we have heard.
