Hey guys,
I'm deciding between the m17x r3 and Sager NP 8150 (95% gamut) and one of the main selling points for the Sager for me was the screen. I'm not a fan of glossy (at all, I HATE glossy), and in the videos I've seen of the m17x the gloss is terrible it seems.
I don't want this to be an AW vs Sager war, but I want people's opinions on the screen, if it's actually that bad, or if there any solutions. I've seen a matte screen protector, but I have a feeling that will decrease the quality of the screen when it's applied, because its an extra layer of covering.

if you dont move it a lot, meaning it will mostly stay on your desk in your room, it would be ok. Otherwise glossy is a minus, at least to me.
-
-
Then I personally would not go with a glossy display. Its more vivid when used indoor, but when outdoor, reflection is extremely annoying under light. I used a R2 once in my car when driving is Vegas and honestly I could only see part of the screen.

Officially, NO. But there's a folk in our forum who also hates glossy so much that he took off the glossy panel from his M17x display, lol. If you love AW that much and hate glossy that much and you are brave enough, try this:

I also hate glossy and hoped so much that R3 would have the matte option. I just hate the reflections so much.
I would love to mod my screen to matte. -
Looks like I'll be getting the Sager though...
-
I do enjoy the colors though, I guess I'm lucky to have my desk facing windows rather than having the windows behind my desk. -
-
Is not bad, if you keep away from the Sun.
Colors are more crisp and better looking... but as everyone says: glossy = mirror. -
Having both, I prefer the glossy. But you can probably live with either.
Glossy is better image quality for sure, but you get some reflections. Given that I'm often able to control and ignore the reflections I prefer the glossy.
Note: If the screen is larger (like a monitor) the glossy is a bit more of a bother and the choice is harder to make. -
FXi, what do u mean better image quality? The colors look more vivid on glossy for sure, but not neccessarily mean more accurate though
And for sharpness, I dont know if one is better than the other. -
I dislike glossy panels, to say the least. They are just bad for my eyes. My laptop (Asus) is connected to simply brilliant LG L245WP-BN. I don't have to explain how cheap TN panel looks next to P-MVA
-
I love the wet look.

Since the annoying gloss and reflections comes from the Plexiglas covering the screen and since the matte screen is already there (under the Plexiglas), a right manufacturing-marketing 'trick' that will satisfy everybody can be a Plexiglas cover that can be taked out an put in according to the needs of the end user (and so, avoiding the moddings, with the included loss of the warranty or the annoying anti-glare filters, etc....).
As always, it depend on the openness to new ideas from the inside Dellienware alien teams...It certainly could be a sweet attractor for 'the more than many'…
-
What plexy does is it makes terrible screen look half-decent to decent. They can get away with the low(est) quality TN panel and save HUGE.
-
Dell already had a good experience making snap in/snap out LCD cover inserts for some of their laptops. To make a plexiglas with the same snap in / snap out design feature its not a complicated 'enterprise' at all and surely can add a lot of adaptability for the users. And, finally, as everybody knows, Dell knows very well how to make money from those useful add ins... -
You are right, we are talking upscale models here and it is certainly possible to add that feature and still have nice matte screen as an option.
-
My m11x's glossy screen bothers me to no end. Underneath, it's... another... glossy.. panel!!

Better contrast
Deeper blacks
Less "smudge" to the image
More pop
Better saturation -
better contrast - agree
deeper blacks - may be
less "smudge" - but matte is more "real"
better saturation - agree, but also means not so accurate
add: glossy makes my eyes tired faster also. -
I put on the greenonions screen protector and love it cuts down a good 95% of the glare.. contrast dose take a slight hit but not enough to make me even think about taking it off..
-
-
It would be difficult for me to use a main laptop without a matte screen.
The difference is night and day.
Matte 4life! -
Thanks! -
Every screen I have ever had were matt, until these and I really don't notice anymore. My desktop has a matt and even though it is nice its not as vivid as the gloss. And I like the protection for the screen, I have a friend that was moving his lappy and lost his grip. He save it from hitting the floor but put his thumb threw the screen
anyway it's all choice and would be nice if we had it. Would I not buy an Alienware because of the screen? HHmmm, I would
-
I know that many go used to the glare and then feel it just occasionally. But some of us (and I made my own small research among my colleagues and students) when we need to work on graphics, CAD, media editing, etc. and even with large Excel files... we get tired very quickly. Our eyes suffer seriously from the glare and the big majority uses their computer (specially an expensive one like the AWs) not just for gaming. When we give lectures, usually in a bright room where everybody can see the others, the guy staring at us from the screen is very disturbing... as an alien in our classes!
I can't find just now were I put it, but I had a not so small folder with many serious researches on the effects of the glare on the eyes, especially in the retina and the nervous system and also on the level of concentration and the impacts on interpreting data from the screens.
As I state it before, this is a great forum for many purposes and I hope Dell’s /AW people read this forum to learn some ideas from the threads and posts. Indeed, I have learned a lot here. -

Glossy screens rock I would never purchase a matte screen ever. Why pay for a beautiful lcd screen and dull all the colors. I dont use my laptop with a lightbulb on my chest so I dont notice any glare. if I do use it in the sun.. Ill just turn so my lid isnt directly reflecting the sun. its not hard to do.Click to expand...
LOL. Your car exhausts fumes, should you not use it? Cities have polluted air? Permanent respirator? Don't go outside you might start coughing up blood. Maybe you shouldn't leave your house bad things can happen.
See how easy that is to adjust to anything? Using your logic and "examples" it'd be pretty easy to justify smoking... But almost no one here does it?
Back on topic: For general use I'd buy Matte but if it was something that'd stay in one place that I could fully control the lighting of I'd go glossy. -
No problems with glossy here, even under the bright Caribbean sun. As long as there is a good antireflective coating, then it's much better than my Lenovo antiglare/matte screen.
-
Fellows, it's clear that for some people the glossy reflective screen is not an issue. They like it and there is no intention to argue with that.
But for others that need/use the laptop also for work (like CAD design, media editing, giving lectures, etc.) it is really annoying.
So, according to the well experimented SpeedyGonzales, Dell glues the E2E plaxiglass on the bezel surrounding the screen... It's so important that glueing? What damage can be from not gluing it (just adding a snap in/out feature) so people can use the glossy when they want and other can take it out when they are annoyed by it?
I just hope that someone with the power to make decisions at Dell/AW is reading this forum (and this thread among the others)
Does the glossy screen bother you?
