So is the GTX 10x0 series "IT" for MXM? is the 1070 "IT" for the m17x r4 GPU upgrade? The end for Upgradable laptops and all future GPUs gone?

unfortunately as much as i hate to say it i think it is dead
nvidia has shown that it doesnt want to make mxm cards anymore so we are left with whatever is left

Pretty much every 2xxx gpu now is soldered, except the alienware area 51m which has dell's own proprietary connector

There is also RTX GPU's from Clevo that are sort of kind of MXM, but its bigger than the standard MXM3.0b form factor..
There is also no point in slapping anything above a 1070 when the best CPU you can get in there is a 4 core i7-4940MX that might run at 4.2-4.3Ghz.

Unless you want to play LoL or CS:GO at 300Fps max settings(and even those will have double digit 0.1% FPS's), you wont take advantage of such GPU on such a limited CPU.

There is the HP RTX 3000/4000 Quadro that could possibly fit in legacy machines, but they are very, very expensive (600-1000 USD)
