I know I've asked about this on other threads, but as I didn't get many answers and I'm getting quite worried with this issue on my M15x, I decided to create a new thread.
So, I think my fans (more precisely, my CPU fan) are showing a strange behaviour (or maybe my CPU is warming too much). It's almost ALWAYS on and very rarely switches off.
I'm running my computer on balanced mode, with the 8800GTX on (which is around 67C on iddle with the fan on 2000rpm) and not using the laptop at all, and the CPU fan is going around 4000rpm (let's say, 90% of the time the computer is on).

Here is what happens on full CPU and GPU usage, and I think that's OK...

So, bottom line... I'm worried as the CPU fan will only very rarely switch off. If I turn on my computer and even using it very little, the CPU keeps warming up until around 55C, and then the fans kick in at 4000rpm. The only times when the fans switch off are when the temps are pushed under 45C (which almost never happens).
Can I please have some input from M15x owners (specially people with the T9300 CPU)? Some info about idle temperatures, fan speeds, etc etc...
THank you very much in advance,
M.

Sigh. I have ordered the exact same setup as you (even down to the 4bg crucial ram I got seperately) and these issues are shaking my confidence horribly. I'm in Phase 4 and the only thing stopping me cancelling the order is my geek-worship of the spec of this machine. Sorry I can't actually provide any detail yet but I just wanted to express my concern (I guess I'm looking for reassurance!)
Have you sent this data in to AW CS? -
Raps, there are only two major problems I can see in my M15x (and quite a few minor ones). The Fan on the CPU always on (although that doesn't interfere at all with the experience with the laptop... only a bit too noisy) and the wobbly screen.
Appart from that, the M15x experience has been a good one. Obviously I'm afraid of what the future will bring, but well... life on the rope is exciting. -
I don't understand the issue ? When is the fan behaviour erratic ?
The m15x is a laptop which produce a lot of heat. You need to have a lot of air cooling. Moreover the heat issue which made brake the m15x at the beginning had been solved with a greater fan speed and activity no ?
I believe there is some program if you want to stop your fans manually.. but I don't think it is a good idea ^^.
Sorry for my English. -
The problem is, the CPU-Fan is running all the time, even in the lowest power profile while idling! And this is at rpm of 4000 what is very noisy for not doing anything!
And again, I had the same "problem" with my t9300 and it annoyed me to hell! Was one of the reasons I sent it back... I don't think its an erratic behaviour rather a sign of a bad cooling system :> -
your cpu temperatures are normal so the fans are doing their job.
what is the temp in your room? -
I am not saying it is erratic... I'm asking whether it's not normal. The tittle of the thread is a question. That's what the question mark is there for!
I understand the computer heats up a lot, but regarding the CPU... It's the same CPU as you have in any other computer. I don't see why it would produce more heat than the same processor on a, let's say, Dell M1530 (which I owned and was quite silent).
The only thing I'm trying to figure out is whether this is normal and all the M15x laptops have this same behaviour or if this is something particular from my laptop. The thing is ... the CPU fan is on ALL the time. Spinning at 4000rpm makes it noisy (not loud... juste bearable), so I would like to clear out whether this is an issue with my laptop or a generalized thing.
By the way, if I switch to stealth mode, the fans do turn down a little (but not completely). This is also true for stealth mode with integrated graphics. -
@crizzler... thanks (again) for sharing your experience.
@exiled- The temps are completely fine. Both CPUs and GPUs. Max I get with GPU is average of 87C (and very rarely Downclock with the x30 bios) and with CPU is around 72-75C. So the temps are fine, it's just the CPU fan not ever switching off even if I'm not touching the computer. That's what I don't understand and I don't know if it's normal.
My bedroom is room temp (around 18-23C), so I don't think this plays any role on the fan behaviour. -
No problem, always happy to do it - again, again and again!

I think this is pretty normal behavior. -
Hey milcs I tested mine just now so I could give you some results. Its seems that the fan control is the same for everyone. When I started my pc it was idle at about 48c with no fan. I started to push it and when it got to 55c the fan kicked in at around 4500 or something like that. Then I stopped pushing it went back down to 48/47c the fan was still going at like 4200rpm so I put in stealth mode where it dropped it down to 45c then the fan stopped now I'm at 49c again with no fan. To me the fans aren't to loud doesn't bother me a bit. Its much quieter than some I've worked with. This is my conclusion when it first starts up as soon as it goes to 55c the fan won't stop till it gets to 45c (if it ever gets that low) and won't turn back on again till it reaches 55c again.

@Chaz and Taco- thanks for your inputs. It's quite helpful. It's really nice to have this forum around. It helped me (and so many others) so much, that I think the whole forum should be praised...
Moving on... Regarding the fans... Don't get me wrong, the fans don't really bother me much. I actually think hardware wise, my laptop is very well served and I think I can say I'm lucky (as I only saw GPU downclocking once and I constantly follow the GPU clocks and temps (BIOS x30, mind you)). I am just concearned whether this is normal or not.
I have pretty much the same as you taco, but once the CPU temp reaches 55C, the fan will start and like, once every 5 hours it will drop the temps of the CPU to a temp that will make the fan stop. That's what I thought it's a bit weird...
BUT... it doesn't really bothers me (specially if this is what happens to everyone). -
I think this is normal to every m15x (maybe with a little variation depending on the CPU used and how good the heatsink was installed) and it is more or less a matter of taste.
For me my laptop has to be completely silent when I surf or do office work, my definition of silent is that I can only hear my harddisk spinning and the fan kicking in at low rpm from time to time. This was the case with my previous notebooks but not with my m15x, so it really annoyed me :> Unlike other that might be perfectly fine with a constant noisy fan running... -
@Milcs
Don't worry it's normal as I said in my review here . My fan behavior is just like that. Nothing wrong with yours milcs
-
@iElSayed- that's amazingly good news. That review of yours is like an exact replica of what I would have to say. I assume you have bios X30.
Thanks again, you are a star. And that's one less weight taken away from my chest...
As you say, this M15x is really from another world. Hope it won't change with time...
Erratic fan behaviour on the M15x?
