Just got my Alienware m17x, awesome machine. Just a quick question. When at the Post, a error comes up saying "Connect supported Ac Adapter for Optimal Operation". Is that normal when starting up on battery? I know i can go into the bios and disable the warning, but just making sure nothing is wrong. Everything seems to be running fine, it charges fine and battery works fine. So just wanted to make sure this was normal. Thks in advance.

Yes it's normal when adapter warnings are set to "on" in the bios.

In fact, no, this is not normal.

I have the exact same issue regulary... of course you can disable the warning into the bios but there is a side issue: sometime, the battery won't load. The system detect the power but refuse to power up the battery. You have to go through a whole process (remove battery, clean bios, remove power, hold pbutton...) to resume the charging process. When you have to do it every three days, it is a real pain.

I get the same error if I try to turn it on, on battery. But I get to continue with boot if I press F1.

You should not get any POST errors - sounds like the BIOS is not reckonizing the DC brick as being the correct size, (this is a common Dell issue). There is a small centre pin that I believe changes voltages dependent on the DC PSU size and if this is not working, bent or broken the motherboard will not allow the battery to charge - this is to stop you using a 65w psu to supply your maxed out M17X and causing a fire )

Call Dell and see if they will send you a replacement PSU, if a new PSU does not work then it could be a new motherboard is needed (

BTW - On my wife's Insperion the message went away after I flash her BIOS.

Please dont get the issues confused. The OP clearly states that it comes up when on battery not when plugged in.
