Essential in general - notepad++, Eclipse for Android dev, Dev C++, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, HWinfo64, VLC, Foobar2000, Elpis (local pandora player, supports media keys), LibreOffice, µTorrent, Copy (Dropbox competitor, with much higher referral bonuses and base storage), inSSIDer (wifi channel analysis), Duplicati (encrypted incremental backups), and I'm probably forgetting some.

Essential for a gaming laptop - Steam, MSI Afterburner for the OSD, and of course the latest drivers.

 

Interesting that you run 3 different browsers, mind elaborating on what you use them for?

 

Basically making sure a website renders properly in all 4 browsers supported on windows. (Yes, even IE - but 10 is significantly better than, say, 6)

But really, I just use Firefox/Opera/IE when I'm testing a website - all my recreational or research browsing is in Chrome.
