Do you know if there a cooling benefit in temperature drops by swapping the 2 pipe with the 3 pipe heatsink?

EDIT: Oh and do you have the part number?

Only thing I'd add to that would be to keep your original heat sink should you need to RMA. Although the part fits, technically it's not the right part as it's for the Ivy XM.........best to be safe than sorry.

I'm not sure what the exact drop in temputeres is, but I guess it would be significant. The 3 pipe heat sinks are the same ones that are put into the extreme editions processors. So I would imagine that they work well in our non extremes. The part number is 0MXJ5. You can get part numbers for the M18X from here http://forum.notebookreview.com/8506918-post2.html

Thanks for the heads up. Also when I took a look at the invoice of my order it listed the part not only being for the extreme edition CPU, but also for the non extreme. I think if your configuring your AW from scratch, you can request for this upgrade.

Hrm... I just noticed that you have an M18x and I have a M17x. I don't think it would work for me anyways. I would need to find out what the upgrade part would be for my system... :p Oh well. Let us know what the temperature drop is like then when you get that installed.

EDIT: Looks like 3 pipe heatsink is probably unavailable for the M17x as the XM series CPU was never offered. Oh well. :(

I would caution you against using Windows 8 until they get the bugs worked out on the gaming aspects. I have read and heard that Wndows 8 presents nightmares for gamers as well as game makers. I am stating this under the assumption that you will be using your Aienware (gaming) computer to game ;)

Oh and does this update the M17x to an R5?

no, the AW line will not be officially updated to the next generation until the next generation of graphics cards come out from AMD/Nvidia and/or intel comes out with the next generation of processors (haswell, 30% more powerful than the current ivy bridge proccessors).

I've only seen and read both pro and con regarding Windows 8 so I'm a bit confused as if to even get it. I planned on using it for a bit before cloning it to my SSD, this way if I didn't like it I could just pop in my Windows 7 SSD but its a premium home and would conflict with the memory selection over 16

Wonder if I should hold off until Windows 8 gets a good approval or bad

I'm sticking with Windows 7 until the first service pack for 8 is out - there's bound to be something wrong, or inconvenient.

They've probably had more resources deployed for Windows 9 (or the next version), than for fixing Windows 8, over the past six months to a year... It's business. :)

I'm going to skew a bit off topic but address the part about the ram over 16GB. That should be a non-issue on 64-bit which we all use at this point.

Agreed, sticking with Windows 7 until I can find a way to stomach the metro interface on a non-touch device.

I can definitely understand the frustration with W8. Have tried it and wasn't impressed at all. Their server os refresh on the other hand is far more promising - I'm currently running a Server 2012 on my M18x and it very stable. Need it for work, so there's no real choice for me. I really miss the aero effects though. Wish microsoft offered more eye-candy effects similar to linux.

I'm glad I'm not the only one concerned about Win 8 and its UI format on a non touch device. I understand the change so as to catch up to Apple but I don't see how this new UI will work on a non touch system, don't make sense but I also haven't had a chance to test it so I'm just assuming things based off reports of others who have tested and either like or dislike Win 8

I am going to call AW today and get a price quote and negotiate and see if can get a 30% coupon or 30% off and if so might order, crosses fingers.

Choosing the 3840QM over the XM because I really don't think I will benefit that much extra for the extra cost of the chip.
Choosing the minimum 6gb ram and will buy 16gb of the hyper x from third party as a lot of you have advised.
The dual 680 sli is easy choice.
    3 year warranty.
The only thing I'm questioning is regarding the wireless killer n card. I have read on a forum that some are not happy with this card because it doesn't do HD or something. I would like to be able to watch my videos or content wireless via my 55HX929 TV but confused as to what I items I need to do this with.
