I also hated this glossy screen so I ordered a thin anti glare matte film that you apply to the screen. It can be tricky to apply and you must start with a crystal clean completely dry surface. They custom cut the film to your exact specifications, just tell them the dimensions of your screen. When I say exact i mean use millimeters or 1/16" increments. If you aren't comfortable installing the film yourself you can send them the screen and they will matte finish it themselves for a fee. Personally I think its a huge waste of money when you can just apply it yourself considering the shipping fee there and back plus the additional fee to apply.
I use the RJ1 anti glare material. It's diffusion is almost as good as the heavier MXT but it lets more light through and doesn't mess with the colors as much and it still has great anti glare properties.

No I don't work for these people or anything. This post kinda sounds like an ad but really just trying to help out all the people who hate the shiny screen.

nice, could you post some pix ?
-
Yes, decent pics would be nice
-
Tried the ViewGuard and it didn't do the trick. I guess we should be careful choosing the AG filters for the thick E2E plastic. It should be custom made IMHO to account the thickness of the cover. Dunno...
Sleey0, did you try removing the E2E plastic? I remember there was somthing in the first R1 owners thread... Do you think it's possible to remove the cover, cut a frame in it and put it back exposing the screen. The screen itself should be matte, right? -
-
I'm on the verge of trying this and don't know how long will hold on before attempting the crazy mission...
-
-
Pictures would really be helpful in deciding whether or not to buy
-
I'm sure someone (maybe Sleey0?) did it few months ago with his R1.
Hopefully, Sleey0 can shed some light on the subject when he's back. -
Everyone talking about cutting this or that doing all this extra work. All you got to do is measure the exact square you need and they custom cut a piece. you peel off the back exposing the adhesive and you stick it very carefully. -
i am concerned that it affects the quality of the picture
does it ? -
Also the image quality is the biggest concern. I mean, it surely does remove the reflections, but does it preserve the perfect quality of the image now? -
Is the picture exactly the same as when it was glossy?, no of course not it does slightly very very slightly dull the colors. I don't really notice it unless i concentrate on it and think about what it looked like before. In other words for me the picture quality is fine. I've never used it outside before. The only time it's outside is when the lid is shut and I'm carrying it somewhere. I'll let you know but I haven't seen any dots in very bright fluorescent lighting at my school.
They even warn on the website. If you work in color critical projects to not buy an anti glare film as it does effect the tones of the colors very slightly but thats true with any matte finish. As I just play games and type papers my color tones don't need to be 100% "graphic designer for a multi million dollar animation studio" perfect.
That's just the trade off of glossy vs matte. Glossy = extremely bright accurate colors and higher contrast ratio but reflections galore, Matte = not as bright or accurate colors and less of a contrast ratio but no reflections. Choose your preference but ya can't have both. -
pics would be great as stated
-
Yes show some pics, someone did the similar thing with their xps M1340.
-
i would show pics but the only camera i own is the crappy 1.3MP webcam on the alienware. Trust me tho it works very well and the death of reflections on my screen is worth a lil contrast loss IMO
-
I wonder how well they would handle the M11x, the E2E isn't quite square and I would want it to literally fit the entire E2E plastic layer.
-
give them the exact measurement and they will custom cut it to the exact specification for a slight fee. Give it to them in mm's or in 1/16;s of an inch
-
I might give it a try but only after getting my W510. Will compare the anti-glare LED to the RGB LED and see what my eyes like more.
-
-
Looks like I'm gonna abandon the beast with all its power and use the W510 as a road warrior + medium gaming.
I'll return to the AW/Clevo camps when they start offering anti-glare screens. -
are you still within the 21 days ??
sorry to see you go champ -
Am I the only one not really bothered by the screen..? I just turn it a little bit if it happens to be facing window or a light directly. I don't see what's all the fuss about...
-
-
Anyway, it's a great lappy and will stay @home (it's gonna be a present for my beloved one, as she's a part-time gamer). I'll be more than fine with the ThinkPads and wait till Sandy Bridge.
-
Matte screen options haven't been readily available on 99% of most systems in years.
I don't see how a glossy display, at this point, could be a deal-breaker. lol -
for thousands of people complaining, i only see maybe a dozen people that is really interested in this.lol
-
There's a reason people moved away from matte: It offers poor contrast and although it does a better job with reflections, the dull colors isn't a good trade off. Plus people just like shiny things lol.
I lol'd at the "thousands of people complaining" bit too. -
It bothered me at first but I got used to it.
For the thousands of people complaining about the glossy finish of the alienware notebooks
