So today my friend came over and brought his M5500 because he said it wasn't running too well. Well I checked it out, cleaned up some apps, and installed the 174.76 XP 32bit driver. Well luckily for me that led me to the problem. After he quit out of LOTR:O the Nvidia panel displayed a temperature setting. I wasn't sure how hot it got so I downloaded ATI tool and checked it out.
The temperature climbs to 105C in around 10 minutes, and then it downclocks to save it. After it does it the first time, it happens around every 5 minutes after that. I'm going to call tech support with him tomorrow about it. I actually noticed that he had crack on his notebook because of the heat from his laptop combined from the pressure from him typing.
What I'm really hoping is that tech support doesn't try the old "natural causes" thing. I really don't think they are going to be able to help him, just like they weren't able to help me at all with my M5550. I'm actually worried because I don't think they will have any of the parts so he will have to wait. Steve I hope you read this because I don't want my friend having to send his laptop back 3 times in a row, always waiting a few extra weeks on parts especially since this is his only computer.
I'll update you guys on what happens. All I know is that I hope that he gets the issue resolved. We are going to call tomorrow. Steve or Frank if you have any recommendations let me know since he is like the "A" student and I don't want him not having his laptop effecting him.

OMG, that is smokin HOT!!! Does the fan work at all???
-
Yea the fan is kicking in on full blast, I can clearly hear it. The M5500 and the M5550 both had severe heating issues. My old M5550 went up to 98C and downclocked and I had to send it in 3 times before I could get a credit. I hope he doesn't have to do the same since it is really annoying.

I never owned an AW laptop but here is my little opinion.
1.) any chance that the air vent(s) are blocked?
2.) have you guys tried reformatting the whole system?
3.) is it newly discovered or happening since day 1?
8 years ago my desktop HDD had bad sectors and the whole machine got so hot even though the fans were fully rotated. -

2. Yes
3. Been happening for 1.5 years but he didn't know about it but was always wondering why his computer was running slow.
4. The temp. is his GPU temp. -
@Dhoang - He still has his warranty left so I'm going to call the roswell crew for him tomorrow in a 3 way call or something because he has no idea what the hell he his talking about and I'm afraid TS will take advantage of him.
Yea I don't think they can fix it but of course they will try and probably not succeed and waste time from having to order old parts. -

Maybe a problem with the thermal paste or the heat sink not screwed down tight enough? Is the air coming out of the back of the system hot or cool?
